Gears of War 2 review
8th June 2012
Loved the first one. I wanna make that clear
I played the first GOW with a cheery optimism, despite the camera deciding to throw a tantrum and coat the screen in different shades of Brown and grey, the credits rolling just as the game got good and the main character having throat cancer. The credits rolling when traditionally in games you'd just be entering the mid-way point was probably because some clever monkey up at head office realised this brown and grey cow can be milked some more with GEars of war:the locust strike back.
So now I play Gow2
So after three hours of wading through what could have been mistaken for GOW1 I suddenly lose interest in the bits in-between the cut scenes which consisted of flexing your muscles as you put another cap in something ugly and instead read the story online. Turns out I was almost finished...woo...
Now mildly miffed I proceed to go online...to which I metaphorically entered a deserted town in which the only inhabitants were some shady characters who seemed just as lost as myself. But despite the small population seemingly not one person without a 1 bar internet connection existed...so much for that then :'(
Horde mode consists of you getting your bottom kicked in a slow and painful way... while co-op only makes for a slower...more painful death. I would like to say I stuck it out till I got good but it seemed like between me and the game it would be a one sided effort. It feels less like an arena mini-game and more a campaign mission where the guy in charge of the enemies lent on his copy and paste button too long.
Overall 6/10 for todays standards....would have given it more at the time of release :)
However for a rental...its probably worth mentioning that you need to be a big fan to appreciate it.
