A Masterpiece but slow in today's terms
2001 - A Space Odyssey review
1st December 2012
Hi I can't really believe some of the other reviewers, except that they must be YOUNG and used to the quick-fire, CGI-lead, don't stop for a minute to make people get bored or even think . . . fast scene changes and spinning camera work will hide poor content & acting . . I saw this with my Grandfather about 40 years ago (yes, it and me are that old). We both didn't understand it then! Seeing it again in Blu-ray - a nice touch, brought back the wonderful film. Yes, by modern standards it is slow moving but then it does span the lifetime of mankind!! Putting Strauss (Richard) and Strauss (Johann II) into the music was a gem. Much better than the silly engine screeching sounds we now get with space scenes (and daft cos there's no sound in space!). Anyone reading Arthur C Clarke's books will understand these films and as a piece of cinematic history they are gems. Not sure I could recommend em to kids as they would get bored but I enjoyed seeing 2001 again (even saw a few things new - like Leonard Rossiter in a small scene). I still think the ending weird but then this was the 60's! I'll watch it agin in 40 years . . . maybe!
