When this series came around I was a lttle worried that such a bloody war as The Great War could be used as comedy material. If it wasn't done well it could have been seen as insulting the memories of our men and boys who paid a terrible price.
Thankfully the writing was excellent and the cast used it to good effect and produced a comedy series that highlighted how our 'Lions' were led by 'Donkeys' as the quote goes.
Blackadder although not wanting to 'go over the top' never comes across as cowardly but as someone using the modicum of common sense he was born with.
The final episode was also very well done and the last scene departed from comedy and really was excellently played as they finally 'go over the top' and meet their destiny. As the final act comes to an end the screen fades to a field of red poppies which was a fitting tribute to the many men who didn't find that time funny.
Watch it and enjoy it as comedy of this quality only comes round once in a while.
