Director George Lucas has signed on the dotted line, agreeing to transform all of his six Stars Wars movies into 3D, alongside the likes of Avatar.

The films, which made a huge impact on sci-fi fans everywhere back in the eighties, are being touched up for eye popping results, starting with Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace – which is expected to be released in 2012.

“The cutting edge conversion will take that immersion to the next thrilling level,” a statement on the Star Wars website revealed.

The first three films, originally featuring Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill, found a new lease of life in three additonal prequel movies, made from 1999 through to 2005.

But fans were not impressed, with many arguing that the new franchise simply didn’t stack up to the original eighties trilogy. And it seems this latest 3D decision could also ruffle more than a few feathers.

Celebrity fan Simon Pegg took time out to tweet about the news: “Watching TPM in 3D would be like the car actually crashing into your face as opposed to just unfolding before your eyes.”

However, 3D is proving to be the studios’ best friend of late, with their visual tactics boosting UK box office takings by 8%.
