Charles Dickens’ novel Great Expectations has been reimagined for the big screen several times over, and the latest interpretation, starring Helena Bonham Carter, will begin shooting next week.

The adaptation, directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), will commence filming on the 10 October and run for 10 weeks in the UK, with backing from Number 9 Films.

With an impressive line-up featuring, Bonham Carter as Miss Havisham, Ralph Fiennes as the convict Magwitch, and Robbie Coltrane as Jaggers, this version of the novel promises to stand tall amongst its predecessors.

Dickens’ classic has been reworked several times, most notably in recent years by Alfonso Cuarón, featuring Ethan Hawke and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Speaking about the new film Newell said: “Great Expectations has been a book that has haunted me since childhood and it is a privilege to bring to the screen one of the greatest stories in the world.”

Chris Collins, Senior Production Executive at the BFI, added: “The BFI is delighted to help make this film possible.

“Dickens' classic story, brilliantly adapted by David Nicholls, along with Mike Newell's direction and the superb array of British acting talent suggest that this production will itself become a classic of British cinema.”
