Helena Bonham Carter could be slipping into a wedding dress for her latest role, in a big-screen adaptation of Great Expectations.
According to Variety, the actress is in talks to play Miss Havisham in a reimagining of Charles Dickens’ classic.
Miss Havisham is a spinster and shut-in who wears only her old wedding dress after being left at the altar. The role seems a fit for Carter who tends to enjoy eccentric roles. She’ll next be seen reprising her role as Bellatrix Lestrange in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2.
It is also being reported that young actor Jeremy Irvine is in talks for the lead role of Pip. A relative unknown, Irvine was handpicked by Steven Spielberg for the lead in War Horse, the upcoming adaptation of the popular Michael Morpurgo novel and West End play.
Great Expectations will be helmed by Mike Newell, director of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and, most recently, Prince of Persia.
Production on the film is set to start later this year with a release scheduled for 2012, to coincide Charles Dickens’ bicentenary.
