Writer-director Tony Gilroy has been putting his feelers out for a new lead in the Bourne Legacy film, with best mates Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire rumoured to be vying for the part.
Gilroy and the casting directors have been searching for the perfect replacement to take over the franchise, after it emerged that original Bourne hero Matt Damon is not on board for the next film.
The list of potentials include; Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Garrett Hedlund, Taylor Kitsch and Kellan Lutz.
Variety reports that the newcomer will not play Jason Bourne but a similar character who has connections with the over arching Bourne storyline.
Insiders stress that no front-runner has emerged and it is likely that a lesser-known actor could be cast, as Gilroy wants to screen-test all candidates – a move which may put off the more established actors.
The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum grossed almost $1 billion worldwide.
