Rumours had been circling of a remake last year, but now Johnny Depp has officially signed on the star in a reboot of the 1934 film noir, The Thin Man.

Depp will be teaming up again with Pirates of the Caribbean 4 director Rob Marshall - who is known for directing musicals, Chicago and Nine - with John DeLuca acting as producer on the project.

The Thin Man will likely work as an interim project for Marshall, who is currently helming the big-screen version of musical Wicked.

In a statement released by Warner Bros. Marshall said, “John and I are overjoyed at the idea of working with Johnny again, especially on such a classy and classic project.

“We are also thrilled to be partnering this time with such wonderful producers as Christi Dembroski and Kevin McCormick, and we are looking forward to working with Warner Bros. to create a reinvention of a beloved story.”

The original film, based on the novel by Dashiell Hammett, is about a couple and their dog who solve cases together.

Depp will be playing retired private investigator Nick Charles, a role originally inhabited by William Powell. Which actress will take on Myrna Loy’s role of socialite Nora, Charles’ wife, is yet to be confirmed.
