Keira Knightley is said to be stepping into the shoes of icon Greta Garbo in yet another remake of Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina.

Knightley is reportedly first choice to star as the 19th century Russian adulteress, previously played by acclaimed actress Garbo in 1935.

Tom Stoppard is said to be penning the remake with director Joe Wright at the helm – which will reunite the director and the actress after their Oscar-winning collaboration on 2007’s Atonement and work together on Pride and Prejudice.

At present, Knightley’s involvement is purely hearsay, but it has been confirmed by London-based studio Working Title that they have secured the rights to the film and will be working closely with Wright on forthcoming projects.

Working Title founders, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, have explained that Stoppard’s screenplay is due in the coming months.

“We’re developing a number of projects with Joe, and Anna Karenina is one of them.

“I’m not saying I’ve made up my mind, but there’s something about Anna Karenina, Tom Stoppard and Joe Wright that sounds right,” Bevan told the Daily Mail.

Karenina has already been adapted over 10 times, including a 1997 reboot starring Sophie Marceau and Sean Bean.

Meanwhile Knightly can be seen as a spoilt celebrity who shacks up with a London gangster (Colin Farrell) in the gritty thriller London Boulevard.
