Lionsgate have announced they’re going to remake one of the most iconic dance films of all time; Dirty Dancing.
The studio is yet to announce the cast but Kenny Ortega is attached as director. Ortega is well versed when it comes to dancing movies, having choreographed the 1987 original and directed the High School Musical films and the Michael Jackson documentary This Is It.
In a statement Ortega said, "Patrick Swayze set the bar for men dancing in the movies as Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire did before him.
I believe everywhere you look there is evidence that the talent is out there and I can't wait to begin the process of discovering the next breakout triple-threats."
While fans may be reserved about the news, Jennifer Grey, who starred as Frances "Baby" Houseman, has given the remake her vote of confidence; "I'm so excited about this news, and I think there's nobody better to do this than my beloved Kenny Ortega, who is as responsible as anyone for the success of the first one. I can't wait to see what he's going to do with it."
Back in 1987, Dirty Dancing only cost $6 million to make and has gone on to earn more than $215 million worldwide. Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, a prequel starring Diego Luna and Romola Garai, was realised in 2004 but didn’t fare well with critics.
Paramount’s Footloose remake finally hits cinemas this October, after being plagued with production problems and cast changes, including Ortega dropping out as director.
Here’s wishing this new Dirty Dancing film better luck.
