Rachel Weisz has entered negotiations to play the Wicked Witch in Disney’s upcoming film Oz: The Great and Powerful, a prequel to The Wizard of Oz.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Weisz is joining the Sam Raimi directed picture, alongside cast members James Franco and Mila Kunis.
Weisz, who won an Oscar in 2005 for her role in The Constant Gardener, is set to play Evanora, the villainess in the film.
Franco has beeen cast as a savvy salesman who gets caught up in some real magic when his hot air balloon is swept up by a tornado and carried to the land of Oz, where he encounters two sister witches.
While Black Swan’s Mila Kunis has been cast as witch number two - Theodora, the less evil sister to Weisz’s Evanora - whose spurned advances on Franco cause her to contemplate the dark side.
David Lindsay-Abaire, the writer of Rabbit Hole, has penned the latest draft of the script, and Raimi will begin shooting in July.
If Weisz’s role is confirmed, this film will signal a return to her blockbuster days in The Mummy franchise, in which Weisz made her name.
