Brace yourselves for more Blade Runner action, coming in various forms.
Alcon Entertainment, a financing and production company aligned with Warner Bros, is in final negotiations to secure the rights to the Blade Runner franchise. This historic move will be the biggest deal in the company’s 13-year history.
According to Deadline, Alcon have acquired the rights for the purposes of producing sequels, prequels, television shows and videogames. However, the deal specifies that although Alcon can produce projects based on situations introduced in the original film they cannot re-make it – which will come as great relief to many film fans.
Johnson and Kosove, joint-presidents of Alcon, stated: “This is a major acquisition for our company, and a personal favourite film for both of us.
“We recognise the responsibility we have to do justice to the memory of the original with any prequel or sequel we produce. We have long-term goals for the franchise, and are exploring multi-platform concepts, not just limiting ourselves to one medium only.”
Blade Runneris commonly considered one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time, not only has it been wildly popular but has also been the subject of study by the most revered film theorists.
Based on Philip K. Dick’s acclaimed novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, the film adaptation was directed by Ridley Scott. The story follows a retired police officer, aka blade runner, played by Harrison Ford, who returns to duty by hunting down human replicants in a post-modern LA.
