The Weinstein Company File Lawsuit Over The Crow Remake

Before Bradley Cooper's rumoured involvement in The Crow could be confirmed, the much hyped reboot is already running into trouble - namely a lawsuit issued by the Weinstein Company.

Harvey and Bob Weinstein have taken legal action against Relativity Media and CEO Ryan Kavanaugh over distribution rights of the remake, Deadline reports.

The Weinsteins claim that all involved signed a contract giving them exclusive worldwide distribution rights, but Kavanaugh intends to break this contract by distributing the film without their say.

The original film, starring the late Brandon Lee (who was killed during filming when a stunt backfired), was distributed by the Weinsteins and Miramax back in 1994. It grossed $50.6m in the United States.

Relativity Media have retaliated by issuing a statement accusing the Weinsteins of 'intimidation': “This is yet another typical litigation stunt from the Weinsteins who have a long history of threatening law suits with the sole purpose of intimidation.

"If served, Relativity will seek immediate dismissal.”

The Crow is based on the comic book of the same name by James O’Barr, and follows a rock musician who is brought back from the dead to avenge his fiancée's death and own murder.

Bradley Cooper is in early negotiations to play the lead role, while Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, director of 28 Weeks Later, is in line to direct the film, should these legal issues allow the project to continue.
