Sci-fi fans can punch the air in celebration; there will be follow-ups to the 2011 blockbusters, X Men: First Class and Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Cominsoon.net broke the news after cornering 20th Century Fox Chairman and CEO of Filmed Entertainment, Tom Rothman at this year's IFP Gotham Independent Film Awards.

Rothman divulged the big-wig studio’s plans to get both Rupert Wyatt and Matthew Vaughn back on board to direct the sequels, once suitable scripts are in place.

"Both of them were really great scripts and so we have to be sure to get great scripts again," Rothman said.

“We're working hard on the scripts for both of them, but we have every hope of moving forward with them."

However, both films will prompt a certain amount of intrigue, as both X Men: First Class and Rise of the Planet of the Apes wrapped up neatly, serving their purpose as prequels.

But who are we to argue, if these follow-ups are anywhere near as good as the first films then it certainly can’t be a bad thing.
