A planned remake of Beatles movie Yellow Submarine has been scrapped by film bosses following numerous delays and setbacks.

Back to the Future director Robert Zemeckis set the project up and hired Cary Elwes, Dean Lennox Kelly, Peter Serafinowicz and Adam Campbell to play the Fab Four in a remake of the 1968 animated film.

The production was due to feature 16 of the band's songs and use advanced motion-capture technology to re-create the fantasy world.

But the film is said to have suffered budget troubles, while a meeting with Beatles representatives was pushed back numerous times and a planned conference in December (10) was cancelled and never rescheduled, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The publication now reports bosses at movie giant Disney have decided to abandon their plans to shoot the film.

Zemeckis is reportedly hoping to continue with the project by finding a new backer.
