Brief synopsis of I Am Legend - BLU-RAY Version

In I AM LEGEND, Will Smith joins the ranks of Vincent Price (in 1964's THE LAST MAN ON EARTH) and Charlton Heston (in 1971's OMEGA MAN) as the star of an adaptation of Richard Matheson's 1954 novel of the same name. Often surprising in its focus on loneliness and loss, this thoughtful, eerie, and restrained sci-fi horror film provides a parade of startling visuals, but never allows special effects to overcome the human element. Smith, in a strong performance very different from his usual persona, is Robert Neville, the lone survivor in a New York City where streets are overgrown and deer gambol among deserted vehicles. Following an epidemic, the Earth's population has been turned into an army of nocturnal zombies. Immune to the virus, military scientist Neville searches for a cure in his Washington Square townhouse. Haunted by visions of his family leaving quarantined Manhattan two years prior, he drives through the city with his German Shepherd, Sam, by day and barricades his home from the monsters nightly. But when Anna (Alice Braga)--another immune stranger-finds him, they will have to fight the onslaught twice as hard.

Akiva Goldsman and Mark Protosevich's emotionally-charged script showcases the charisma of Smith, who commands the screen alone for most of the picture (aside Abbey, the talented pooch). Director Francis Lawrence (CONSTANTINE) uses music minimally, wisely allowing the eerie cityscapes to remain mostly silent. The set pieces, including an overgrown, deserted Times Square and a lion hunting a deer in the Flatrion District, are goose bump-inducing moments of stark beauty. A chilling and effective adaptation of a horror classic, I AM LEGEND is also a thought-provoking piece of Hollywood filmmaking.

Critics Reviews

New York Times

There is something graceful and effortless about this performance (Mr Smith's), which not only shows what it might feel like to be the last man on earth, but also demonstrates what it is to be a movie star

The Hollywood Reporter

Smith, sporting a newly buffed physique, delivers an extraordinary performance as a man slowly coming unglued under the strain of no human contact and a constantly alternating role of hunter and prey

Entertainment Weekly

Smith is the perfect actor... to play a survivor who has no one to talk to but his dog and himself... he also draws on the vulnerability he showed last year in THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS

What a typical dull American film. They spent money on the special effects and forgot to spend it on writing a half decent story line.

Avoid this film!

Rated - 3 starsIs it Legend?

I wasn't sure what to expect from this, but I think you'll either like it or hate....Theres no inbetween. I'm still not sure about it, the idea is a good one but just not sure if it's really that strong. The special FX are very good, but the ending a little predictable....It's worth renting, nothing more.

Virus, zombies, one person with the cure?? Great concept, been around a while though & milked to heck already, story is full of holes, ridiculous situations, ridiculous story, stuck there for 3 years & no attempt to go anywhere, spend a bit of time looking for a cure, a lot of time chasing deer, has keys to a shop he locks in a city with no inhabitants except zombies, alternate ending??? no way I can sit through any of that again, definately one to rent & not one to buy. If you were in a city with no-one else would you look behind you when backing up, would you chase deer in your car shooting out the window or just sit & wait for them to appear, if there is this place of hope on the hill why don't they radio him back, when he spends the whole film preserving his life at the end he blows himself up with a grenade when he could of killed them but got awa y with the woman & child too.

Alternate ending isn't much better where he does go off with them, it's a cheap imitation of resident evil which has been there, done that, & did it much better.

Typical big budget Hollywood film - no real substance to the story and such a waste of Will Smith's time! The only highlight was the sight of him working out with a bare upper torso - but my hubby did not appreciate that bit, so found the whole thing rather disappointing following all the hype in the news.
