Brief synopsis of VIKING: Battle For Asgard

The goddess Hel - daughter of Loki, Norse God of mischief, has been banished from the heavenly kingdom of Asgard for defying Odin's rule. Angry at her fate, she seeks to release the ancient wolf-god Fenrir which legend tells will bring about Ragnarok - the apocalyptic battle that will destroy Asgard and the Gods. With her army of resurrected Viking warriors, Hel marches on the unsuspecting mortal realm of Midgard.

Odin's daughter Freya, goddess of love and wisdom, is appointed the task of stopping Hel and defending the future of mankind. For her champion she chooses Skarin, a great but troubled young warrior, ignorant of the true reason for his favour with the Gods and thrust into the midst of their bitter war.

As Skarin, players will experience unparalleled battle scenes, leading the charge in a titanic clash between powerful gods and mere men. War on an unprecedented scale will rage across a beautifully realised Viking landscape. Vast, living islands, free form worlds filled with discovery, stealth, brutal combat and culminating in epic battles the like of which have never been seen on console before.

I was quite impressed by this game and enjoyed it despite the repetitive nature of the quests. The big battles involving 100's of friends and foe are fantastic, even if the frames per second drops drastically. However, after the long final battle sequence I made my way to the boss and guess what, she was bugged. The character model was 90% of the time invisible, unable to hit me and I was unable to see and hit it. When she did appear on screen the legs were stretched off the screen sideways not even touching the ground and all the textures and details were distorted.

I managed to die somehow and when it reloaded, she was still bugged. I exited the game and booted it back up but this took me to the beginning of the 30+ minute battle sequence and I could not be bothered to do it all again if there is a chance the boss would still be bugged.

There were often also crashes of the game which required the console be switched off before it would respond.

What could have been a good game ruined by a lack of testing and polish.

This is what could be referred to as a lesser version of Conan. It's the same hack and slash principle with a gradual learning curve on the combo attacks. There is a teeny tiny RPG element in that you get quests to achieve rather than just going from point A to B killing everything. However that is what you end up doing your just directed where. The amount of combo's available is disappointing, both Conan and Heavenly Sword have an endless stream of them. The finishing moves are quite satisfying. The big battle sequences are a nice touch shame they don't get much variety. This is a good game for a weekend rental, its possible to complete it in 2-3 days. Otherwise go for Conan or Heavenly Sword, they do the same thing but far better.

Rated - 1 starViking - Battle for Release Date

A Game with a good potential, but sadly botched as it was obviously released in a state far from terminated.

The tutorials are scarce and ludicrous (Only after I killed my 8th monster I got a prompt telling me 'Press X to attack')

The game introduces elements in a random order, for example you can get a quest after you have already completed it, and you can attempt to unlock battle moves which require you to perform battle moves that you have not learned yet (this will force you to wait for the timer to run out and fail)

The cinematic scenes are in a crude state, the characters don't even move their lips as they talk...

The combat system does show a potential for variety but sadly this is ruined by the over repetitive selection of similar enemies, rapidly dragging you into boredom.

The graphics are not bad and the gruesome execution animations are well made; sadly they are repeated and repeated to the point they become more annoying then anything else.

In other words, this game is bugged, badly. It could have been a good game, sadly some reasons (lack of money? will to respect the release date at all costs?) made the producers release it in a state so shocking that I could hardly recommend it to anyone.

Not too bad a game but quite boring after a while. Maybe similar to what Lord of the rings should have been like. Funnily enough the music when the bad guys attack seems to have been taken directly from Lord of the rings:twin towers on PS2. The graphics are okay but quite often slows down as if the PS3 can't cope, the only good bit is some of the attacking moves.
