Brief synopsis of Penelope

Like Tim Burton's EDWARD SCISSORHANDS and the TV show PUSHING DAISIES, PENELOPE is a modern fairy tale, complete with candy colours and whimsical cinematography. PENELOPE begins with a generations-old curse by a jilted lover: the next girl in the aristocratic Wilhern family will be born with a pig's snout and ears. Though ages pass, the bad luck finally manifests itself in young Penelope (Christina Ricci) much to the shame of her mother (Christopher Guest favourite Catherine O'Hara). In an effort to break the curse, her mother and father (Richard E. Grant, WITHNAIL AND I) try to bring in a series of blue-blooded suitors. But when they see her face, the men all run screaming. Enter Max (James McAvoy), a down-on-his-luck gambler who connects with Penelope. But when he is exposed as a fraud, the heartbroken girl escapes into the surrounding city. Though she hides her face with a scarf, Penelope gets to experience life outside her family's mansion for the first time.
Pig nose and all, Ricci is adorable as the title character, excellent in alternating between naivete and independence. Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon succeeds in double duty as both a producer and in a small acting role as Penelope's first friend in the big city. But it's McAvoy, a standout in ATONEMENT and THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND, who threatens to steal hearts. The pair's romance is believable, and it makes the film good viewing for fairy tale fans of all ages. The PG rating should appeal to families, as should the film's message about the importance of inner-beauty and self-confidence.

This film is superb. my daughters loved it. Generations ago, a witch placed a curse on the Wilhern family that would result in the next girl being born into the clan having a Pig snout -- and now young Penelope (played by Christina Ricci) has fallen victim to the vengeful hag's unsightly grudge.

When newspaper reporter Lemon (played by Peter Dinklage) runs a misleadingly frightening photograph of the kind-hearted Penelope, her parents, Jessica (played by Catherine O'Hara) and Franklin (played by Richard E. Grant), lock the girl away in a sprawling mansion.

Though it is said that the curse can be lifted if a man of Penelope's status takes her hand in marriage, every man who lays eyes on the girl takes flight at first sight, never to return -- until the arrival of Max (played by James McAvoy), that is.

An unrepentant gambler with a heavy heart and an ulterior motive for meeting Penelope, Max is unexpectedly caught off guard by the pig-nosed girl's disarming charm, and suddenly flees before having carried out his plan.

Now determined to throw caution to the wind, and explore the world on her own terms, Penelope makes the acquaintance of independent-minded delivery girl Annie (played by Reese Witherspoon), who quickly agrees to join her newfound friend on the ultimate journey of self-discovery.

well worth renting out.

Rated - 5 starsTop notch family entertainment

PaulaWestwood from Ashton-Under-Lyne [Highly rated reviewer] , 04/02/2008

A full film outing for writer by Leslie Caveny who wrote and co-produced the tv series Everybody Loves Raymond, this is quite brilliant. Born to a well to do family thats past has just caught up with it. Penelope has been born with the nose of a pig originating from a curse an old witch cast generations ago. Hidden away from the public, it is apparent that the only way the curse can be lifted is through the love of some fellow blue blooded suitor, born with a silver spoon. Could the arrival of Max (James Mcavoy) save the bacon ? Or will the attentions of a tabloid hack, intent on a top pay day by publishing pictures of the girl-pig, ruin the whole thing. There are other neat twists and fun asides in what is a really lovely fun fantasy fable that can't fail to entertain. Definately worth a watch.

ok the plot mite sound a little odd but after seeing the trailer i thought i'd give it a shot. the acting from james mcavoy & christina ricci is excellant and their friendship then love for each other is as good as any other worth while film

the only bad points i have about this are 1] reese witherspoon cud have been used better & more often as when she was her acting lightened up the story & 2] the ending was rushed abit

great film though. rent it! :]
