Brief synopsis of Men In Black 2

Reuniting director Barry Sonnenfeld with most of the original film's cast, MEN IN BLACK II picks up with alien-monitoring secret agent Jay (Will Smith) in a rut. Weary of the isolated life of an MIB operative, Jay continually fires new partners until MIB director Zed (Rip Torn) teams him up with the talkative pug Frank (voiced by Tim Blaney). Together they investigate an "alien-on-alien" murder witnessed by the lovely Rita (Rosario Dawson), who Jay immediately falls for. The case eventually leads Jay and Frank to track down agent Kay (Tommy Lee Jones), who now works at a rural post office, completely unaware of his former life. Unfortunately, it's what Kay can't remember that may save the world from destruction at the hands of the shape-shifting alien Serleena (Lara Flynn Boyle). As Jay attempts to jog the memory of the reluctant Kay, Serleena takes over MIB headquarters, building up to a big New York City showdown.
A fast-paced follow-up to the 1997 sci-fi comedy, MEN IN BLACK II sticks to its guns, offering up more action, aliens, and intergalactic weirdness. This time around Smith and characters such as Frank and the wisecracking worms are the focus, although Jones makes the most out of his screen time with his deadpan persona thoroughly intact. And, as with the first movie, MIB II features plenty of enjoyable scenes, including an underground romp involving a subway-sized alien and Frank the Dog's head-out-of-the-car-window rendition of "I Will Survive."

Rating of 2 stars out of 5 Radio Times

While a sequel to 1997's hit Men in Black was a financial inevitability, its quality was less easily guaranteed. Original director Barry Sonnenfeld is back for this second sci-fi comedy outing and he's on reliable, if cautious, form. Echoing his Addams Family movies, Sonnenfeld demonstrates the advantages of building on an established franchise. It's a case of “if it ain't broke, don't fix it”, as the smart-suited alien immigration agents Jay (Will Smith) and Kay (Tommy Lee Jones) return to save the planet, along with other familiar supporting players (including the hilarious talking pug Frank). This time, however, it's a super sexy Lara Flynn Boyle who's causing the cosmic chaos as evil alien queen Serleena. Her restrained performance lacks depth and menace, and adds no meat to an already emaciated plot. For fans it won't matter — there are enough flashy special effects, colourful alien life and sharp humour to keep them happy. But, despite Smith and Jones's practised, witty bantering and bickering, you can't help feeling that this is the least everyone concerned could have done.

Rated - 3 starsNot As Good As The First

A decent enough film but not really a patch on the first one. Tries to include all the same elements but doesn't come together like you'd expect it to. Still it's a good sci-fi comedy, the sort of genre mix you don't see too often so give it a go, plus Lara Flynn Boyle is great as the planet destroying baddie.

Rated - 5 starsFlush me J, flush me!

If you loved MIB, you'll love number 2. If you didn't love MIB...what?

At the end of the first film, K was neuralised, (had his memory wiped), and returned to his lady friend with the story of having been in a coma.

A few years later J is king kiddie of MIB, neuralising fellow agents who aren't up to scratch. Meanwhile, a spacecraft containing a very nasty alien lands in Central Park with the intention of getting its hands of 'the light of Zartha'. If it doesn't, the Earth will end. Oh dear.

Unfortunately, the only person who knows where the light of Zartha is is K, now working in a Post Office and totally oblivious to the work of MIB...

Watch out for some hilarious performances from the whole cast. Guffaw with laughter when they find a de-neuraliser on ebay! This film has all the comedy you have come to expect from MIB, a good story line, superb acting and great effects. First class.

Rated - 2 starsRehash of the Original

TuGood from Bristol , 03/08/2004

There's nothing new in this badly made rehash of the original. The humour and originality has gone, it goes to prove that amazing special effects alone are not enough to carry a film. Young children may find this film mildy amusing but there is little in this film for anyone else.

The best bit for me was the DTS cinema surround sound so I am obliged to give two stars.

Rated - 3 starsMen in Black 2

Kazz from West Yorkshire , 26/10/2003

I thoroughly enjoyed this sequel to Men in Black. It was just as amusing as the first movie and had an intriguing story line. As with the first movie, it was a bit short and left me wanting more. It was good to see the original characters returning for the sequel.

Worth watching !!!

AS you would expect this is not as good as the first, but watch it if you are a Will Smith fan.
