Brief synopsis of Tipping The Velvet

TIPPING THE VELVET is a slightly raunchy drama from the BBC that more than anything is a passionate love story between two Victorian women. Set in the 1890s, it follows the rise of Kity Butler, a male impersonator in the musical halls and her devoted dresser Nan. When Kitty ends their affair, Nan drifts into the seedy sexual underworld of Victorian London but winds up destitute, alone and about to face the biggest decision of her life.

A classic costume drama about lesbian love in Victorian times. If you can get past laughing out loud at the lead characters fake, deep voice then you will find a ripping good story, which moves from the dance halls to poverty and then back up again. Fundamentally, it's a love story that's well acted and beautifully shot.

Not actually a film in the true sense as it`s set in 3 instalments even on the DVD. Was originally shown on the BBC. I bought this DVD as soon as it was released. Shows Nan as she comes to realise she doesn`t really like boys but prefers girls, and follows her through a range of partners and their different lifestyles. takes you through the full range of emotions as you come to care about the characters. Laughing at Nans facials expressions as she goes about one of her 'jobs' and almost crying when things go wrong. Without spoiling the ending, the 'Throwing a rose scene' near the end of the film had me on the edge of my seat.

Rated - 2 starsI missed it on TV ...

...so thought I'd take this opportunity to catch up.

Period pieces are not normally my cup of tea, but I'd heard good things from friends who had seen it and let's be honest, as a red blooded male I knew if nothing else there was naked totty contained within.

Oh but it contained so much more. A good story line, well fleshed out by the main characters who managed to build their roles in to a position where they were not only believeable, but we could sympathise with them when things went wrong.

The depiction of the country at this time also generated enough interest to make the hours while away. Well worth a viewing.

Rated - 5 starsFantastic!

A 3 part drama series from the BBC based on Sarah Water's novel - Tipping the Velvet. Absoutely fantastic, the acting is great, cast is brilliant (and good looking). Starts when the main character is 18 and charts 7 years of her life of which she discovers her sexuality. A must see!
