Brief synopsis of The Mechanik

Dolph Lundgren stars as former Russian Special Forces agent Nick Cherenko in this well-made action flick. Abandoning his old life for a peaceful existence with his wife and child, Nick receives a rude awakening when they are killed in gang crossfire. Moving to the U.S. and beginning once again with a job as a mechanic, Nick is given the chance to extract revenge on those who killed his loved ones, and the fighter in him is re-awakened.

The action is paced, good shootouts, blood & gore, an entertaining movie and overall a pretty good action film. This movie is also directed by Lundgren himself and although he's only directed 1 movie before this does a pretty good job.

Not that one could expect perfection from a film directed by and starring Dolph Lundgren, but I had hoped to see an action film that at least broke out of the mould. Unfortunately, although the film obviously had a considerable budget for its type, the directorial inadequacy of Lundgren really shows.

The film was plagued with bad camera shots, a generic soundtrack, and mediocre acting; but the most frustrating was the overuse and just plain misuse of slow motion in the already badly shot action scenes. Oh and of course, I wasn't expecting much of a plot, but the film lacked any sort of depth in both story and in character identities.

I can't write this one totally off however. There were moments of enjoyable watching, where the action came together and I've always found Lundgren a less wooden substitute to Arnie or Segal. In fact, Dolph Lundgren plays his part as the Russian better than the more talented Englishman Ben Cross, who was undoubtably poor throughout. Overall, one can hope for better things in the future from Lundgren, who, to his defence is still new to directing.

One of Dolph's better films, better then his usual anyway. A good action film.

Chisel-faced Dolph lumbers his way round this low buget B movie thriller.

The dialogue and acting is wooden - so wooden are the characters that it's quite a surprise that they bleed coupiously when shot, beaten or hacked to death.

The best thing I can say about this film is there's some nice shots of rural Russia to enjoy along the mediocre way.
