Brief synopsis of Okami

The Goddess Amaterasu, reborn as a white wolf, has a mission to rid medieval Japan of a demonic curse that's swept across the nation. With the help of a pint-sized creature named Issun and your trusty paint brush it's your chance to defeat evil in the form of a massive eight-headed serpent that was killed 100 years ago and has been reborn.

Rated - 5 starsOkami Is Beautiful

Some have accused this game of copying the key features of Zelda and the Twilight Princess, and there are striking similarities, due to the main character being a wolf, and the focus on stunning visuals and beautiful cutscenes. However, these accusations are, though not without basis, slightly misplaced. Whereas it is true that Okami's Main Character is a Goddess who goes by the name of Ameriterasu and takes the form of a wolf, the story of Okami is based on ancient Japanese folklore, which really shows through in the storyline. Whilst on the subject, the storyline is, in my opinion, the best I have seen in a game since Final Fantasy 7 (HUGE praise there), with so many twists and turns, you never really know how long the game could go on. For example, I thought, on three separate occasions, that the game would end at the end of the cutscene i was watching, only to be surprised as the story twisted and i was presented with a whole new adventure!

The combat system is a joy to use, and although it utilises the constant wiggling of the wii remote to attack enemies, it never gets boring or tiring, as the attacks can be broken up by using the delightful techniques of the celestial brush.

The celestial brush is the centrepoint of the game. It is what Ameriterasu uses to put down her awesome godly powers. It is used by holding down the B button, and drawing a shape that corresponds to the desired technique. The techniques available range from a slash to attack enemies, to a bomb to blow up enemies or obstacles, to a gust of wind to put out fires. I believe there are around 14 techniques in total, and they are unlocked throughout the game. They are also EXTREMELY easy to use, and feel completely natural.

Last but not least, we come to the selling point of the game, it's beauty. the whole game is presented in the style of a Japanese watercolour panting, with broad lines surrounding objects, and the entire screen bursting the bright and vibrant colours. This really is a game best played on a great TV that can really handle colours. The visuals are truly stunning and there are some that will bring a tear to the eye of even the most hardcore gamers. It's a beautiful game. Now go rent/buy it.

I have never seen or played such a unique game in my life.

Great story, fantastic graphics, marvelous characters. It may seem weird to control a wolf acompanied by a bug who's main weapon is a massive paint brush but this leads to some of the most emmersive and involving gameplay ever.

I played the PS2 version but this would also convert so well on the wii, what with the motion sensitive remote etc and its influence even seems to have spread to the new Prince of Persia game with the regeneration of landscapes and so on.

Some may compare it to Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, but in my opinion this is far better. Recommended to anyone who wants to get absorbed in an involving, but not too difficult, RPG or anyone who fancys something new and totally different from anything else out there.
