Brief synopsis of Resident Evil 5

The biohazard threat has not ended! Just when it seemed that the menace of Resident Evil had been destroyed, along comes a new terror to send shivers down player's spines. Chris Redfield, returning Resident Evil hero, has followed the path of the evil literally around the globe. After joining a new organisation, Chris heads to Africa where the latest bioterrorism threat is literally transforming the people and animals of the city into mindless, maddened creatures. Chris must take on the challenge of discovering the truth behind this evil plot. In Resident Evil 5, Capcom will teach players to fear the daylight as much as they have feared shadow in previous games.

If you are wondering how it plays in comparison to Biohazard 4, there is no worry.

The Xbox 360's controller makes aiming a whole lot easier, and the game being set in Africa is an exploration of culture, not racism.

Native speakers, matching senarios, the lot will make you really feel that you are in Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Kenya. Las Plagas is back; it's no longer zombies you go against, you shoot, punch, and take down intelligent 'life-like' barbaric savages, who work together, give each other commands, and find they're way to try and rid you from their schemes.

Sheva, the new character, fights along with Chris Redfield (Clair's brother, from the previous games) as they travel parts of Africa in an all new Resident Evil experience.

Since the addition of the newer character, and the fact that Chris is a much better trained officer (STARS) than Leon (RE4), cooperative modes -- Online of Local -- is an adventure in team-work, and combat skill.

Who knows what the news is, with the classic Biohazard characters: Jill Valentine, and Albert Wesker.

Rated - 1 starMissing atmosphere

Not a game designed for fps players. If you liked the earlier games you will probably love this, be aware the atmosphere is lacking, at no point did I get scared or even jumped (and I dont watch horror films because they scare me). Couldnt get on with being so limited on movement, not being able to reload a gun and move is frustrating and having to put you knife away to move closer to a zombie then get it out again to hit them is even more frustrating. If you want fast paced, dont bother.

Rated - 4 starsSolid refinement of RE4 formula - bit short though.

glennok from Ashurst Wood [Highly rated reviewer] , 28/03/2009

This game gets stuck quickly in to the action. It is similar to RE5 in almost every way, the control scheme, the progression of enemies and locations and the upgrade weapons system. All of which work just as well as in the previous title.

Single player is fun, but hampered by some annoying AI issues with your sidekick Sheva, so coop is definitely recommended. Split screen handles well, with not much visible graphical downgrade or frame-rate issues. The coop experience is far more tense and exhilarating so recommend it over single.

The graphics are stunning, very stylistic but also subtle, with great lighting effects and textures that are as crisp as you'll ever see them on a 360 game.

Storywise it manages to wrap up pretty much all the loose ends. The RE timeline is a bit of a mess, with so many installments adding different pieces to the puzzle. but this manages to provide a summation to the saga that seems just about credible despite how far-fetched the series has developed the story. In this way though the game retains some of its campy feel despite having some harrowing themes of genocide and morbid grit.

The controls are similar to RE4 although you can strafe while running which makes things a bit easier. you still cant move while aiming, but once getting used to this handicap it makes the whole thing more tense. The weapons/inventory system is a step back from RE4. Instead of a large screen with different sized weapons to move, rotate and organize, the game has reverted to the one-block per item approach from older games. The organizational feature from 4 was a nice feature which feels a bit lacking here, however the inventory screen here doesn't take you out of gameplay, so it provides a far more tense experience than being able to organize your items while a horde of enemies wait patiently for you to get back in the game. No merchant either, which breaks the flow of the game a bit. Instead just weapon screens when you die, or progress to a new chapter.

Its a great action game with great production values. The mercenaries mode makes it replayable and very fun. With online and offline coop and unlockables its worth a buy.

Only thing it lacks is a real sense of horror, which started to seep out of 4 but in this game its almost become a full-fledged action game and at times lacks the eerie atmosphere that makes RE what it is. Its also much shorter than 4 and could have done with more content. Its a short, but very sweet experience.
