Brief synopsis of Batman Begins - BLU-RAY Version

Genius of mystery and intrigue Christopher Nolan (MEMENTO, FOLLOWING, INSOMNIA) helms this prequel to the Batman films based on the DC Comics series, explaining how Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) the billionaire prince of Gotham whose parents were killed in an alleyway mugging transformed into the crime-fighting superhero. With flashbacks to his privileged childhood, young Master Wayne, as he is called by the butler Alfred (Michael Caine), develops a terrible fear of bats when he falls through the backyard garden into a hidden cave. As a young adult, Wayne lives among the League of Shadows, a martial arts group in the mountains of Asia. His leaders Ra's al Ghul (Ken Watanabe) and Henri Ducard (Liam Neeson) teach him strength, endurance, and unfortunately evil, against which he naturally rebels. Returning to Gotham and reinstating himself as a dapper socialite and the rightful heir to his parents' enterprise, Wayne quickly devises his secret identity, commanding help from the gadgetry expert Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman). With one eye on his childhood playmate Rachel (Katie Holmes) now a beautiful woman and dedicated lawyer and the other on his mission to save Gotham from criminal corruption, Batman makes his fledgling debut. But when the blue-blooded mastermind Dr. Crane (Cillian Murphy) who steals every scene with chilling menace taints the water system with a hallucinatory substance, Batman realises he has met his first true opponent. An attitude of grave seriousness elevates BATMAN BEGINS above more cartoony Batman movies, as Nolan crafts a dark drama that thrives on sci-fi intrigue. Bale strides into the role with grace, adding refinement that is seldom seen in action-oriented films. And while the action scenes explode with high-tech glitz and fast-moving thrills, they are evenly placed among sequences of plot and character development, making for a complex and satisfying viewing experience.

Warner Brothers have done it again. A flawless HD transfer unlike some other studios (im lookin at you Sony) with a load of extras thrown in too. The inclusion of the first 6 minutes of The Dark Knight was worth the price alone!

This film was the perfect antidote to the dire Batman: Forever and the so bad it could give you cancer Batman & Robin. The script by David Goyer is very well written and for the first time in a Batman movie he presents an interesting Bruce Wayne. I never once thought 'aw god hurry up and get to batman' thanks to a brilliant performance by Christian Bale and the supporting cast were equally as good (except maybe Katie Holmes).

The action scenes are shot superbly by Nolan and the sense of fear and menace was something the first 4 movies were in desperate need of.

Rent this movie, you wont be disappointed.

God this film is poor, Christian Bale has got nothing on Michaels Keatons batman let alone the Adam West archetype. The plot was rubbish theres no Robin, the batmobile looked stupid and had no bat decals, porrly acted, poorly shot and made me feel poorly watching it, could'nt even get to the end. Dont watch this film unless your deaf and blind.

The best batman film so far (besides the new one - which is better) well worth a watch. Doesn't stick to the correct comic book origins very closely however, but probably improves it!

Rated - 5 starsExcellent transfer from HD DVD

Jeffa from Southampton [Highly rated reviewer] , 16/09/2008

I have this title on HD DVD and was hoing the interactve setup is identical and the In-Movie-Experience was the same. I took my time to asses this version because of this factor. I like the quality of the Imax intro to Dark night, but everything else is essentially the same. The good thing about this movie is that it has depth and basically a better more traditional storyline based around the Batman story from DC comics. With DC comics bringing us titles like V for Vendetta as well, we are seeing the era of the comic novel come to the silver screen. And more importantly being taken seriously as film and story property now. The Matrix set the ball rolling in that court. The film has good visuals and an excellent cast.
