Brief synopsis of Batman - Gotham Knight

Some of Hollywood's hottest writers lend their talents to this richly animated Batman anthology, featuring entries by David Goyer (BATMAN BEGINS), Josh Olson (A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE), and Alan Burnett (BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES). With six stories in all, GOTHAM KNIGHT offers thrilling interpretations of the Caped Crusader, rendered in a style that recalls the dark and lurid lines of Japanese anime. Together, these interconnecting tales trace Batman from his early days battling evildoers in crime-plagued Gotham, to his later years as the metropolis's trusted defender. Along the way, the Dark Knight has shadowy showdowns with some of his most fearsome enemies, including Scarecrow, Killer Croc, and Dead Shot. Chock-full of explosive action sequences and bat gadgets, this continuation of the Batman saga is sure to bowl over both comic book nerds and fans of the feature films.

Rated - 3 starsA Prelude [of sorts] to The Dark Knight

Flameswordsman from London [Highly rated reviewer] , 16/07/2008

Gotham Knight is a marriage of East and West. Writers from the Batman-Begins/Dark-Knight film franchise, coupled with some guys from the widely acclaimed Batman: The animated series from the 90's, with direction and art from some of the biggest names from the Japanese Anime field.....All placed in the continuity of the new movies, with things fitting in after Batman Begins, and before The Dark Knight.

.

The whole piece is basically 6 shorts, all running around 13 minutes each.

. The first is about kids interpretations of Batman and his fight with a masked criminal all over Gotham City.

. Number Two is about 2 Cops under Lieutenant Gordon in the Major-Crimes-Unit, their relationship to Batman, and the gang-war that is hitting Gotham City after what Bats did in the 1st Movie. Written by Greg Rucka, novelist and comic-book writer.

. The 3rd is about a new piece of technology Batman tries out, aswell as some time with Bruce Wayne, and the gang-war again.

. 4 is written by David Goyer, who penned both of the new Bat-movies, and deals with a new psycho in Gotham-- Killer Croc, aswell as catching up with The Scarecrow.

. 5 is by Brian Azzarello, another popular comic-book writer, and deals with Batman flashing back to his training in a moment of pain, aswell as some beautiful poetic-imagery at the end of the piece.

. The 6th and final is by Alan Burnett, the man who had a big hand in the critically acclaimed 90's Batman cartoon, and deals with a new assassin in Gotham-- Deadshot.

.

Theres no doubt that Batman: Gotham Knight was good, but it did feel like there was something missing. Some of the shorts do tie into eachother in small ways, but there is no overall story going on, just 6 different interpretations and stories.

I'd still recommend this if you liked Batman: The animated series, anime, or loved Batman Begins, because there is a good slice of entertainment to be had here.

Fans will also be pleased to know that Kevin Conroy, the guy who voiced Batman through-out the 90's cartoon and Justice League series', returns. No imposters to the throne here [I can understand why Christian Bale couldn't do it. He has done a voice-over for an anime movie before though, Howls Moving Castle, so he would be no stranger to it]

I didn't expect this to be as good as it was. the animation was great and the characters and story dark....enough to give it credibility.

I would recommend this to everyone to watch but batman fans in particular will love it.....

After seeing the dark knight on the big screen I was hungry for more batman, so having seen all of the other live action films I though i'd have a look at some of the animated ones, and this did not disappoint.

The gotham knight is basically six short stories, obviously revolving around batman and the criminals of gotham city. I don't know if each part had different animators or a different director or something, but it certainly seems that way. Each story seems to have a different feel and different character designs, but still maintains the dirty darkness throughout. There is some impressive animation and some well exicuted action sequences, along with a deeper look into Bruce Wayne's past and three kid's distorted versions of how they'd seen Batman.

This is closer to Chris Nolan's Batman than any of the other animated series and fans of the most recent films should definitely have a look.
