Brief synopsis of Big Fat Liar

An eighth grader named Jason (Frankie Muniz from 'Malcom In The Middle') presents elaborate excuses for never completing his class assignments. Finally his teacher catches him in one of his worst lies ever, and she threatens him with summer school if he doesn't get his assignment to her by that evening. With all that experience as a creative fibber, Jason writes a brilliant story entitled 'Big Fat Liar'. With five minutes to spare, Jason races to get it to his teacher when a limousine crashes into him. The occupant, a sneaky Hollywood producer named Marty Wolf (Paul Giamatti) gives Jason a ride, and Jason accidentally drops his assignment in the limo. Jason has to go to summer school and it sucks. But when he sees a preview for the movie that Marty made from the his story, he decides to exact revenge on the producer. He enlists Kaylee (Amanda Bynes), his best friend, to help him on his mission. They travel to Los Angeles and concoct a series of silly schemes to foil Marty's plans for fame and fortune with Jason's stolen story.

Rating of 2 stars out of 5 Radio Times

This children's comedy starts well, but descends rather too readily into mean-spirited slapstick. Malcolm in the Middle's Frankie Muniz plays a 14-year-old habitual liar who's understandably disbelieved by his mum and dad when he tells the far-fetched truth for once: that an unscrupulous Hollywood film producer (Paul Giamatti) has filched his latest tall tale, and is turning it into the summer's movie blockbuster. Determined to restore his rep, Muniz therefore heads for Beverley Hills — cue lights, camera, traction as the pilfering producer gets his comeuppance. It's sad to see a quality actor such as Giamatti (Duets, Storytelling) in such degrading stuff, but at least the kids will enjoy seeing a teenager putting one over on an unscrupulous adult.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Its intended youthful audience is unlikely to find much enjoyment in a quick tour of Hollywood and some feeble satire that is on offer here.

Enjoyable family comedy that comes from the old tale of the boy crying wolf. Jason lies so often that when he finally tells the truth his parents don't believe him. The humour is aimed at kids but parents can have a laugh too. I especially liked it when they turn him blue, what a day...

The kids thought it was hilarious, and watched it at least 3 times. Very funny.

An ok movie, but I kept picturing frankie muntz as malcom (malcom in the middle) the sort of movie for a rainy sunday afternoon, when there is nothing on tv

This was a good film if you like the sense of humour of malcom in the middle and although it wouldn't win an oscar, it was a good fun film for the family.

Everyone has told a little lie in their life, if it’s the dog eating your home work, pretending to be sick so you don’t have to go in to school or work, or taking the credit for something you didn’t do. Well this film could have been based on any one of us little liars.

Jason Shepard is a boy who can’t help but lie. Right from the start when he wakes up, he is lying. He should have written his English paper, but being lazy and the liar that he is, makes up a story to get out of doing it. However, everything does not run according to plan, and just when he thinks he has got away with it, he is found out and is given only four hours to come up with the goods, or face going to summer school.

This film has a lot of crazy twists, showing that lying and being nasty to people is not the best way to be. I liked this film, it’s a very light hearted film to watch with no difficult plot line, but at the same time very entertaining and funny from the moment the film starts right up to the end. It’s one I would have no problem watching again, but would not probably add this to my collection, only because it’s not the type of film I would buy. However, I’m sure it will children occupied for a few hours.
