Brief synopsis of Eye, The - BLU-RAY Version

THE EYE adapts the influential 2002 Hong Kong ghost tale by the Pang brothers into a star vehicle for Jessica Alba. While it remains faithful to the original story, this version ups the number of jolts for thrill-seeking Western audiences. Writing/directing team David Moreau and Xavier Palud, creators of the popular 2006 French thriller THEM, make their U.S. debut with a screenplay by Sebastian Gutierrez (SNAKES ON A PLANE), putting a few new twists on a cult favourite.

Concert violinist Sydney Wells (Alba) has been blind since she was five, when an accident involving firecrackers damaged her corneas. Now in her mid-20s, she has just undergone a transplant, a risky procedure that is not always successful. When the bandages come off, her sight slowly returns, and everything she sees is a new experience. A happy occasion becomes terrifying, though, when she begins to see horrifying visions of the dead. Fearing that shes losing her sanity, she enlists the help of Dr. Paul Faulkner (Alessandro Nivola), who uncovers the identity of the donor of her new corneas and travels with her to Mexico to unravel the mystery of her horrific visions. Spare and effective, THE EYE retains the two most startling sequences from the original film--a truly chilling floating dead man in an elevator and an elaborate, explosive set piece at the conclusion. Moreau, Palud, and Gutierrez jazz the story up in other spots, with quick scares, sharp music cues, and twitchy apparitions reminiscent of those in JACOB'S LADDER, but the essence remains the same. Alba is fine as damsel in distress Sydney, and the always-enjoyable Parker Posey is uncharacteristically low-key as her airline hostess sister. With no gore or anything else objectionable, the film may also be good choice for younger viewers who enjoy a good scare.

I enjoyed this film even more when i found out Jessica Alba actually learned to play the violin for her part and this is always a good sign that a star is going that extra mile for the part. The film has a few real jumpy bits and moves at a good pace never really getting bogged down. The Blu-ray disc really does bring the film to life with the colours and sound.

Rated - 4 starsGood but a bit short

I see Dead people again.... The film was a bit short and more abreviated than the original story. This version of the film has a few good and bad points. The good points are that unlike some films it doesn't spend time justifying itself before the story has got going. Some rules have been broken from the original. Sorry but the rules are there for a reason. Some good parts of the story have been missed out because of this. There is another back story to this film which again has been cut and parts have been included in the Deleted scenes in the extra's. As you gather from the beginning of my review here it has taken on the semblance of the sixth sense and it even makes fun of this fact by using a Doctor's dialogue to insert the phrase 'See Dead people...' There is a good progression of the story so for first timers this is not going to be boring. Jessica Alba is the driving force behind this film and it largely sees it from her point of view. look out for yet another apearance of Tamlyn Tomika in an unusual but assuring semi-supporting role. You will better know this actress from her parts in films Like The Day after Tomorrow and has been in many Tv series like Stargate Atlantis. Her parts go back as far as Karate kid Part 2. The film is of course a concept of the original but keeps true to the history of the story itself. I would not go as far as some as saying that Jessica Alba learned to play the music portrayed in the film. She learned the basics whilst a professional violinist voiced over via her instrument. The film has a good cast and a good pace and some reasonable stunts. Good 4 stars.
