Brief synopsis of Muppet Treasure Island

Kermit, Gonzo, Rizzo the Rat and Miss Piggy hit the high seas in this adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic adventure tale in which young Jim Hawkins tries to keep his coveted treasure map from the dastardly Long John Silver.

Rating of 4 stars out of 5 Radio Times

The Muppets take on Robert Louis Stevenson in their inimitable way in this rollicking musical version of the pirate saga. Using the bare bones of the classic story as a framework, director Brian Henson press-gangs the likes of Billy Connolly, Jennifer Saunders and Tim Curry into service for a series of hilarious cameos, accompanied by some rousing songs and the now customary “romance” between Miss Piggy and Kermit. Adults may find the voyage a long haul, but children will love it.

Halliwell's Film Guide

A rollicking, unmemorable musical treatment of an oft-told tale which has some difficulty accommodating the story to its Muppet characters: Miss Piggy appears as Benjamina Gunn, Fozzie Bear is Squire Trelawney and Kermit becomes Captain Smollett.

Sight and Sound

"...A fairly sophisticated affair, allowing the vivid charm of the original to work on its own level as well as providing fodder for parody, slapstick and the vaudeville revue formula of the Muppets' television shows..."

Rated - 2 starsSomething lacking from this one.

Having been a fan of the Muppet movies since I was a kid with the likes of Muppet Movie & Christmas Carol, which both had well written comedy & wit.

Muppet Treasure Island seems to lack both of these, and adding to the fact the leading actor was poor and cannot sing, I was left feeling disappointed by this one.

Rated - 5 starsThe best Muppet Movie & the best Treasure Island

This is an excellent & very funny movie. ?Cabin Fever? is possibly my favourite musical number in any film; it is certainly the funniest. It is anarchic and postmodern; the characters know they are in a movie, which they don?t rate very highly. They have even taken along some contemporary tourists, rats, along for the cruise/studio tour. Tim Curry may seem unlikely as Long John Silver, but he is magnificent at hamming it up and even brings a bit of tenderness to the story. Even the young Jim Hawkins is plausible, enjoying the fun but playing it for real. In retelling a classic story, this works, in stark contrast to Disney?s Treasure Planet. If you enjoy this you will also enjoy Michael Cane in Muppets Christmas Carol.

Achieves the double feat of being true to the quality of the book while being a hilariously funny musical - and Tim Curry is brilliant!

Expect the usual Muppet mayhem with an all-star cast in a hilarious adaptation of a well known film. Fun for everyone.

Rated - 5 starsGreat!

Having been a big fan of Christmas Carol I recently watched the Muppet Wizard of Oz to see if it lived up to the standard. I was disappointed.

I was shocked, however, to find that the Treasure Island was brilliant! so much better than Wizard of Oz and almost as good as Muppet Christmas Carol [it takes a lot to live up to THAT muppet standard!].

It is funny, entertaining, features all the big muppet names and adults and children will love alike. Not too sure about the songs though, I guess theyre the muppets and have to have them but I had to forward the songs.

Rent this!
