Brief synopsis of A Perfect World

Set in Texas in 1963, Clint Eastwood's film is a subtle and haunting work that features what is perhaps Kevin Costner's best performance. Costner plays against type as Butch Haynes, an escaped convict whose tendency toward violence is masked by his affability. Haynes escapes with a more blatantly dangerous convict, Terry Pugh (Keith Szarabajka), planning to ditch him as soon as they cross the border. But Pugh's lack of self-control gets them in trouble, and they take a young boy hostage. Raised by his single mother, a Jehovah's Witness, Phillip Perry (T.J. Lowther, in a heartbreakingly real performance) is fascinated by Haynes's roughneck ways, and the two form a surprisingly strong bond. Eastwood takes a supporting role as Red Garnett, the lawman who, ineptly but inevitably, is closing in on Haynes. With a woman criminologist (Laura Dern) and a trigger-happy federal agent along for the ride, Garnett chases Haynes down while keeping their shared past a secret from his team.

It should have been perfect: Clint Eastwood was fresh from Oscar-winning success with Unforgiven, while Kevin Costner was challenging his heroic status forged in such hits as The Bodyguard by playing a bad guy. As it is, the chemistry isn't quite there and the film has to settle for being just very good indeed. Costner is perhaps a little too introspective as the escaped convict who kidnaps a young boy and heads for freedom in Alaska, developing a curious bond with the child en route. Eastwood plays the veteran Texas Ranger on his trail, growling his way through some trademark throwaway lines and proving yet again that nobody directs Clint better than himself. Indeed, the directing is astute throughout. And who else but Eastwood could take such a potentially thrilling story at such a leisurely pace and still make it compelling viewing? While he clearly has sympathy for the confused con, Eastwood does not flinch from showing his brutal side. Similarly, he allows the youngster to reveal himself as something of a brat and not just a helpless victim. Regrettably, he's unable to find anything as interesting for Laura Dern to do as a criminologist along for the ride, but, as with the De Niro/Pacino face-off in Heat, it's primarily the long-anticipated confrontation between the stars that makes us sit down to watch in the first place.

A very American mix of male bonding, road movie and thriller that every now and then reveals a few signs of originality.

Rated - 4 starsTaut but predictable

A good thriller, perhaps 20 minutes too long, but the outcome is pretty telescoped early on. Kevin Costner gives an understated but quietly menacing performance as the killer on the run with his captured hostage, played delightfully by TJ Lowther. Well directed by Clint, whose performance is subdued but effective.

The boy reminds me of a wet lettuce. Costner works hard, but not even he can lift the film out of boredom ditch. The dialogue (if one can call it that) drags and the plot goes nowhere. The ending - the shoot out over a wretched candy bar is dire. Do yourself a favour. Give this one a skip.

Rated - 5 starsA perfect film

This film is in my all time top 10 favourites. A powerful film based on a simple premise. The acting by all involved is both soft yet tense. The film leaves you with the sense on have been involved with the characters.

Kevin Costner as Butch Haynes the jail bird who for a short while takes on the role of father figure to the innocent seven year old Phillip played by T. J. Louther. The watching of the film only once doesn’t allow the relationships of the people involved to shine.

For me I always feel that I missed something and perhaps if I watched it once more I will gain a greater depth of understanding.

Rated - 4 starsA World Apart

A beautiful and elegaic film which avoids sentimentality and yet delivers a huge emotional punch.

Weaving together a road movie, a thriller, a father-son bonding story and some great comic moments, this is a powerful and under-rated movie.

Clint takes back seat to Kevin Costner, who delivers a fine and thoughtful performance.

The direction is never flashy, preferring to concentrate on keeping the narrative alive, and strong character development. Likely to appeal to both women and men.
