Brief synopsis of Neon Genesis Evangelion - Vol. 1

The year is 2015. As the remnants of the human race cower in subterranean cities, a deadly war is being waged for what is left of the planet. On one side are the mysterious beings known only as the Angels; on the other, the secret agency NERV with mankind's last hope, the awe-inspiring Evangelions. Piloted by a special team of young warriors, these giant bio-mechanical humanoids are the only thing that can withstand the force of the Angel's defense field long enough for the pilots to tackle the massive invaders in brutal hand-to-hand combat! At the same time, NERV struggles to pierce the veil of mystery surrounding the enigmatic Angels...

Many people will outright reject animated films simply because they are 'cartoons'. This is a bit of a disappointment, as the story in this series is unlike no other, and certainly isn't for children.

It may be a bit much for some people though, as it really does throw you in at the deep end of the story. Very gradually is the full plot revealed, and those weaned on high-octane fast paced storylines may find themselves getting a bit bored.

This may be alleviated by the excellent epic fight scenes between the gargantuan beasts, and those that do have patience will be rewarded with the excellent, consistent world crafted by the shows creator Hideaki Anno.

Unfortunately this is likely to be overlooked by most, except fans of the anime genre. However if you like your stories deep, interesting and very original, give it a try. Even if you think animated or subtitled films are stupid, you may be pleasantly surprised.

The first half of this series is basically a typical giant robots vs giant aliens saga - nothing special.

Things start to look up as the plot gets more mysterious, the action is decent and we near the end in anticipation.

*** SPOILER ALERT ***

The end consists of nothing being properly explained, and the final episodes are lots of boring and repetitive psycho-analysing and lazy animation which leads you to believe that the people who wrote this thing had absolutely no idea whatsoever what they were doing.

OVERALL : SERIOUSLY OVERRATED.

I used to own the boxset of this series, its truly overrated. Some fanatics will try to make you think you 'missed the point' but believe me, there's not much of a point. This series has a very poor ending and even resulted in a new ending being released on separate dvd to the boxset ('The End of Evangelion'). To keep it short, this series bites off more than it can chew. By around disc 2-3 it promises much but it just can't deliver. If you're new to anime consider Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, Outlaw Star or Rurouni Kenshin. Neon Genesis is worth a view but dont put it at the top of your rental list.
