Brief synopsis of Conspiracy Theory

A crackpot Big Apple cabbie finds himself in a heap of trouble after his self-published conspiracy 'zine elicits the interest of some shady government heavies--and leads to the unexplained murders of all five subscribers. As the J. Edgars close in, he takes to the lam with the one person who may be able to help him--a Justice Department attorney with a mysterious murder of her own to solve.

Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Mel Gibson plays a neurotic New York cabby who's consumed by wild conspiracy theories and their implications in this uneven romantic comedy thriller from director Richard Donner. It's the newsletter Gibson produces that suddenly intensifies interest in him from ominous parties such as creepy Patrick Stewart, who may work for the CIA. But that's only the half of it, because when he turns to Justice Department attorney Julia Roberts for help, the MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE-like plot takes off. Donner glosses over the improbabilities with his usual considerable style and bravura, and Gibson and Roberts make an engaging team, but the uneasy combination of light laughs and unsavoury darkness eventually conspires against it. Conspiracy theorists will love it, though.

This is a great film that skews between breathless thriller, dark comedy and slapstick often in the same scene. Mel Gibson as raving paranoid crazy jerry is superb, showing him to be a talented actor who all too often lets himself down in films. Patrick Stewart is nicely disconcerting and remorseless as the fabled "THEM" and is a calm and collected foil to gibson's twitching loon.

The only downpoint I'd say is Julia Roberts, she, as always, doesn't seem to have more than one facial expression, which is disappointing as her character could have been explored a lot more.

This film is funny with the quirky acting of Gibson, heart rendering with the emotional performance from Roberts but all together very entertaining.

The onscreen chemistry is great and the twists keep you hooked. Definitely one to watch. My favourite Gibson film (and I've seen all of them, even Tim).

Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts are great together in this film.

The storyline keeps you guessing and the end has really been well thought out.

Definitely one to watch....
