RelatedCritics ReviewsLiver-eatin' Johnson was what this real-life trapper was called, named after a particularly Hannibal Lecter-ish habit that is totally absent from this homogenised, ecologically sound and politically correct near-western. It's a pretty but ultimately boring epic, in which a miscast (too young, too intelligent) Robert Redford struggles through a semi-allegorical screenplay, poorly fashioned by John Milius and Edward Anhalt from two excellent accounts Vardis Fisher's Mountain Man and Crow Killer, a story by Raymond Thorp and Robert Bunker. Despite sterling support from Will Geer and Calamity Jane's Allyn Ann McLerie, the movie simply doesn't jell, and Warner Bros delayed its release in favour of Redford's The Candidate.
