Poetic Justice on DVD (1993)
RelatedCritics ReviewsAfter making a big splash with his first film, Boyz N the Hood, John Singleton lost his way somewhat with this twee, right-on drama that charts the burgeoning romance between hairdresser and poetess Janet Jackson and postal worker Tupac Shakur as they get to know each other on the road to Oakland. Mawkish and well-intentioned instead of gritty and real, the movie is saved by the acting of the two leads — Shakur, especially, had a natural presence in front of the camera and his murder in 1996 brought a promising film career to an end. Incidentally, Maya Angelou wrote the poetry for Jackson's character. Halliwell's Film Guide A disappointing second film from the director of Boyz N The Hood, much closer to a conventional soap opera and with a clumsy and contrived narrative. Variety "...Jackson proves herself a natural in front of the camera....Shakur has the juicier part and turns in truly outstanding work..."
