Rated - 4 starsGood game resting on its laurels

I was expecting a more substantial update to this popular series but EA have played it very safe. Anyone familiar with previous Madden titles will be right at home. Graphics are nice, but it's the same engine and it's not as spectacular as reviews suggest. General gameplay is exactly the same as well, and the collision detection which was supposed to be more natural and based on real dynamic physics? Well that just plays like the previous version too. Any differences are so subtle as to be meaningless.

That isn't to say you won't enjoy the game, of course you will, especially newcomers thanks to the wealth of help in getting to grips with the game.

Camera angles are limited to just two settings, classic and actioncam. They both function to my knowledge precisely the same and they have a fatal flaw in proving far too difficult to defend with - making you very susceptible to successful offensive runs. I would have liked the option to rotate the camera and zoom it in - but there's no such option. QB vision and the superstar camera from previous versions also aren't available, which I find strange, but no matter.

I'm pleased with the game as a whole but it's not the all encompassing update I was expecting and the hype it recieved prior to release is unwarranted. A good game yes, but they are resting on their laurels.
