Brief synopsis of Mirror's Edge

Once this city used to pulse with energy; dirty and dangerous, but alive and wonderful. Now it is something else. The changes came slowly at first. Most did not realise or did not care, and accepted them. They chose a comfortable life. Some didn't. They became our clients.

In a city where information is heavily monitored, agile couriers called Runners transport sensitive data away from prying eyes. In this seemingly utopian paradise, a crime has been committed, your sister has been framed and now you are being hunted. You are a Runner called Faith - and this innovative first-person action-adventure is your story.

Mirror's Edge delivers you straight into the shoes of this unique heroine as she traverses the vertigo-inducing cityscape, engaging in intense combat and fast paced chases. With a never before seen sense of movement and perspective, you will be drawn into Faith's world. A world that is visceral, immediate, and very dangerous.

Live or die? Soar or plummet? One thing is certain, in this city you will learn how to run. From the makers of the groundbreaking Battlefield franchise, Mirror's Edge is an action-adventure experience unlike any other.

This game had the potential to be fantastic, the billiant teaser trailer caused me intrigue, and after reading about it and watching videos on the run up to the release, I was starting to get excited about how good this game was going to be....

I was wrong

Ok, it's not terrible, but it's very fustraiting to play most of the time, and if you're anything like me and get angry at having to repeat the same bit over and over, then don't buy this title, just rent it.

The free running bits are fun but lack consistency, as you will constantly get stuck and not really know where to go, and the combat needs a complete overhaul, as it doesn't feel as smooth as it should do, for examle, you end up having to stop mid chase, attempt to take down an enemy which isn't the easisest thing to do (whilst trying to dodge the 3 shot maximum before you're dead) and keep going, which should have been a nice easy transition, just like it showed you in the videos i the pre-release. But it wasn't, I died over and over again, and after getting about half way throuhte game, I gave up

all in all, a clever innovative idea that lacked the proper excecution to make it a solid enjoyable title.

This game in my opinion is good for a few chapters while you are getting used to the style of play, controls and the storyline. After that it jus becomes a bit like assassins creed. Very samey. Nothing new in any of the chapters, just running, climbing and jumping. Albeit it is graphically nice to look at, apart from that a very average game.

Rated - 4 starsLoved it Hated it......

A customer from Rosyth , 07/01/2009

Was sure I wasn't going to enjoy this after playing the demo but thought 'what the hell'.

The Good:

Found myself hooked from the start and I realised this was quite puzzle orientated. Just trying to figure out how to get up / down / around some of the more challenging levels was great fun. Graphically it's stunning and when you get it right, i.e. you don't fall to your death while running, jumping, sliding, tumbling around the place, the game really feels fluid.

The story line is OK but not exactly epic.

The Bad:

Unfortunately Mirror's Edge is also one of the most frustrating games I've played in a while. Falling to your death can see you back at a point in the level that you had a tough time completing the first time around. This happened to me many times and occasionally I had to quit the game and go back to it the next night simply because I was on my 30th attempt at trying to hop, skip, and jump over a tricky set of obstacles.

Conclusion:

This is a game you will love and hate all in the same game session. I thoroughly enjoyed Mirrors Edge but found myself pulling my hair out on occasions. It's not even a case that you will love this game or hate it, it's more a case of a combined mixture of the two.

If you are low on patience or get bored / frustrated easily, you might want to avoid this title, but for everyone else, give it a whirl. You might be surprised.
