The PS2 version of Ghostbusters the video game should have been better than it is. There's no real need for it to be, on balance, just average. And, if the game were not blighted in two particular areas, it would be above average at least - once you get used to the slightly odd method of controlling your characters' actions, the game itself is perfectly fine, and often a lot of fun. It takes on particular added value if you've grown up with the Ghosbusters movies, cartoons, and comics, as the authenticity of the settings, music cues, sound effects and most importantly - the voice acting provided by the films principle cast - all make this the Ghosbusters game we should have had fifteen years ago, aesthetically at least. What drags it down though, is how buggy this game is. For no real reason, it will crash on you after an hour or so of play - often less. This seems to be inescapable, and is a widely reported flaw with the PS2 version. This is bad enough by itself, but would have been mitigated slightly by the inclusion of an ability to save the game at any point, manually, from the pause menu. This couldn't have been to hard to implement, surely? Though it still wouldn't have made up for the irritation caused by the inevitable crashes. The other major flaw is the graphics. I'm not referring to the stylised look used for the PS2 version (and later, the Wii version). Rather, the graphics are jerky, with the top half of the screen lagging behind the bottom half during fast paced action sequences in particular. That, and the characters often glitch in odd ways during cut scenes, i.e. they refuse to move their mouths despite their character being the one who is speaking at that point. Anyway, these are flaws that can be overlooked, ultimately, as the game is just plain fun, and if not worth buying, its certainly worth renting.

This game was hard to get into. The graphics seemed old fashioned compared to some games.
