Brief synopsis of Sonic Unleashed

Sonic is truly in a world-wide race against time... as the sun sets, a new adventure awakens. In this new adventure, Dr. Eggman is up to his evil antics again, in his quest for World domination. He unleashes a powerful ray that not only divides the world into several continents, but has an unexpected transformation on Sonic's state.

Sonic must travel across the globe, completing action-packed stages to retrieve the power of the Chaos Emeralds to ultimately save the world... and himself! Sonic's world has been transformed, courtesy of a powerful new game engine that delivers the tight gameplay of a 2D sidescroller in stunning, picturesque 3D environments. Sonic Unleashed takes everything you know and love about Sonic and upgrades it with spectacular scenery, new combat powers, an unexpected storyline, and, of course, blistering speed.

Its seems to be common now that Sonic in a 3D realm equals a poor game, and Unleashed almost broke past that general idea, but its latest gimmick stops it from being a great game.

Well, sonic is back again, and eggman has used one of his inventions to make sonic transform into a werehog (Basically a hedgehog version of a werewolf) at night. This basically turns the game into a 2-part story, swapping between playing as sonic in his regular form and his new werehog form.

The times you play as sonic are fun, bringing back an old-school feel of running and jumping at high-speed through the levels, running into enemies before whizzing by. I felt like I had alot more control compared to other 3D outings, there was very few moments where the computer would take over your character, and even then it was very brief. Sonic is fun to play as, and runs very well, the only problem is that his levels are so short, especially compared to the time you spend as the werehog.

Speaking of which, the werehog is slow, dull and the latest in a line of new features that Sega have added to the Sonic series that just feels so poor. Start by taking away sonics speed, then add in a small portion of prince of persias platforming along with a repetetive fighting system, and you have your night-time mode. The werehog seriously slows the game down and its honestly a boring experience.

If there was more sonic, or no werehog, this could have been an amazing game, but unfortunately, it falls behind again, and leaving sonic trailing in the dust.
