Brief synopsis of Bionic Commando

It's been a lo-o-o-o-o-o-ng time coming, but the first true sequel to the 1988 NES classic, Bionic Commando, is finally here. Twenty years on, you're looking at a significantly different game to the side-scrolling, platforming original.

It's been five years in game time since the events of the first game, and things are quite a bit different for Nathan 'R.A.D.' Spencer. Following his heroic defeat of the Imperials, the government - the one he swore to serve - has turned on him and he finds himself imprisoned for crimes he didn't commit. On the eve of his execution, however, terrorists detonate a devastating experimental weapon that unleashes an earthquake upon Ascension City, one that destroys its populace and all but turns it to rubble. It falls to Spencer to once again take on the role of Bionic Commando and take to the streets to save the day. Once again he dons his Bionic arm, complete with grappling hook, and heads into action.

This sequel takes the swing and shoot gameplay mechanic of the original and flips it into 3D. Players will make their way around a vertical and horizontal landscape, swinging and zipping between skyscrapers, shooting out enemies and, where necessary, flipping them into the air or tossing the odd car at them.

It comes complete with a deep multiplayer option to complement the single-player experience, making it the first online game to really feature advanced wire moves.

In the thick of it Bionic Commando is a decent game. Unfortunately it's marred by annoying mechanics and a soul-crushing collecting achievement.

For those looking for 1000G it may take some time and effort. Those looking for a decent game to swing through (geddit?) will find a decent combination of shooting and bionic-arm action.

The story is poor at best and as cliched as they come, especially the voice acting of the main character and the ironically titled 'super' Joe, super grufty more like.

However, the challenges that are scattered through the game give it more life and some are genuinely challenging. Completing most challenges will award you with an achievement, an upgrade, or both. So they're definately worth putting the effort in for.

Didn't get a chance to play on the multiplayer, but i've not heard the greatest of reviews.

Overall Bionic Commando is worth a look, but i wouldn't say worth £40.

Rated - 2 starsbionic but not invincible

ok so short and sweet this game was ok it had realy good visuals and the idea was a good one, that said the amount of times you die majorly out ways the the times you don't its all very trial and error for example after you play a few levels your bionic but apparently ludicrisly heavy and unable to swim commando enters some levels with water on the ground and if you end up on the ground you can safely say unless your close to something its game over man or if you are out numbered by more than 2 bad guys you will spend alot of time running away to get your health back as they seem to be alot better at shooting than youd think. but even tho there are these flaws this game had its moments for example swinging with your grapple can be really cool and when you mess up some bad guy by pulling down a bilboard is somewhat enjoyable so im not completely against this title just think they should have thought more about the grapple design and the grapples length so if u like easy playing games this one is for you but if you like something with a little more depth then steer clear of the commando as this dosent have much
