Brief synopsis of Batman Returns

In director Tim Burton's sequel to his successful BATMAN (1989), the Caped Crusader (Michael Keaton) is pitted against the demented, ravenous Penguin (Danny DeVito), a pitiful, orphaned psychopathic freak who once went on a baby-killing spree, and a 'power' hungry capitalist villain Max Shreck (Christopher Walken). As the two criminals plot to gain domination over Gotham City, BATMAN must plot to stop them. In the highly stylized BATMAN RETURNS--complete with dark, Gothic architecture and moody lighting--Batman (and his alter-ego Bruce Wayne) is thrown a third enemy, a terrible distraction: Catwoman (fearlessly and fabulously played by Michelle Pfeiffer). She is the slinky, sharp-clawed alter-ego of Shreck's secretary Selina. Batman must overcome his own dark past, and his present love entanglements, to rid Gotham of its evil enemies, this time with even more intricately designed sets and tongue-in-cheek humour, making BATMAN RETURNS an action-packed, darkly fun adventure.

Rating of 4 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Director Tim Burton refused to lighten up for the second of the Batman movies (we would have to wait for the Joel Schumacher-directed Batman Forever for that) and the result here is another moody, gloomy and occasionally perverse portrait of the dark knight. As with the first of the series, the sets are suitably stunning, and, while action may not be Burton's strongest suit, there are still some dazzling set pieces and a whole range of new gadgets. The only real problem is that, as in Batman, the villains bag all the best lines — Danny DeVito's tragic Penguin, Michelle Pfeiffer in that suit as Catwoman — with poor old Michael Keaton's Bruce Wayne left to look vaguely troubled while his alter ego Batman bashes the baddies. Even though fans of the 1960s TV show may reject its brooding atmosphere, this is still impressive stuff.

USA Today

"...As Catwoman, terrific Michelle Pfeiffer goes from mousy secretary to liberated lionness. As flipper-fingered Penguin, Danny DeVito is an orchestra of evil intentions..."

More comic-strip story-telling, done as a succession of set pieces, with the towering design of the city and its sewers overshadowing the performances.

BATMAN RETURNS IS ABSOLUTLEY RUBBISH COMPARED TO THE OTHER 3 CLASSICS. I FEEL LIKE THE ACTIUNG WAS WOODEN AND CATWOMAN IS SUPPOSED TO BE A HERO NOT A VILLAN AND WHATS UP WITH CALLING A MAN MR PENGUIN BECAUSE HES SHORT AND FAT. I RECCOMEND BATMAN FOREVER.

The bat is back!

Michael Keaton returns as the caped crusader in this 1992 sequel to Tim Burton's 1989 apadaption of Bob Kane's superhero. This time, Batman faces off against the twisted Penguin AKA Oswald Cobblepot (Danny DeVito) who emerges from the sewer with the help of corrupt city official and corporate villain Max Shreck (Christopher Walken) and tries to take over Gotham by running for Mayor and using his gang to bring Gotham to it's knees. If this wasn't enough, Batman also has to try and fend his way through the seductive claws of Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer) whose dual personality tries to seduce and destroy the Dark Knight.

In all, this is a decent sequel however I feel it lacks something that makes it as good first film. While DeVito does a good job as the disgusting Penguin, I don't feel there's any real chemistry between him and Batman, whereas in the original there was real history between the Joker and Batman. And really, the Joker was a better villain than Penguin. The relationship between Catwoman makes up for this slightly, although I don't feel it was developed as well as it could have been. It feels almost like a sidenote.

However, this is still a decent, fun (yet dark) film and worth watching even if it isn't as well done, and Burton takes Gotham down another twisted path like the previous movie.

It makes you wonder what the next movie would've been like had Burton been allowed to continue the franchise. Instead, Burton was removed and it was handed over to Joel Schumacher.

Oh dear.

Rated - 3 starsVery solid sequel ....

when you thought you'd seen it all out comes another batman classic. concluding from 1989's Batman [the mention of Vicky Vale's in this movie.]

the basic storyline starts off with man named Mister Cobblepot waiting for his wife to have baby the baby is deformed and is named Oswald. Oswald is a little baby boy and will be rejected by society so they send him down the riverbend in basket where he enters the sewers of Gotham and is raised by Emperor penguins who have escaped from the zoo. meanwhile industrialist Max

Schrek [ Christopher Walken - his second turn as the name Max - he played Max Zorin in A View To A Kill] has plans for nuclear power plant for Gotham's energy supplies so he can make lots of money. however, The Mayor of Gotham rejects his idea and so Max is very annoyed. meanwhile the film also chronicles the character Selena Kyle [ Michelle Pfeiffer] Max's secretary who

is very insecure and nervous. Selena 's life is changed forever when she is murdered by man who throws her out the window although her fall is broken she is knocked out only to be revitalized with strange sort of cpr by mystical cats which shows very unusual sequence of her being reborn which seems bit like some sort of voodoo chant or raising the dead sort of stuff. Selena

arrives home that night she's had enough she wrecks her apartment, destroys her cuddly toys and makes her own black skin tight vinal suit and takes on the name Catwoman. Catwoman joins Oswald Cobblepot a.k.a. The Penguin to kill Batman. The Penguin is being helped by Max Schrek too and Penguin is running for Mayor of Gotham.

meanwhile Bruce Wayne starts dating Selena unknown to him that she is one of the villains, Catwoman. this movie really shows some great development of character the only problem is for movie with the triumphant title '' Batman Returns'' this movie dosen't have enough of Batman in it. it's nice to see some clever devices used like sombody taking control of the batmobile who isn't batman + the return of the batplane, the batarang and plus there's some evil clown friends of The Penguin.

Danny DeVito is very very talented and brings an OTT amount of disgusting behaviour and menace to the role of The Penguin while Christopher Walken is very cold and calm and manipulative. Michelle Pfeiffer meanwhile excells in the role of Catwoman and is now the definitive Catwoman. Michael Keaton's return in the role of Batman is okay but not as triumphant as it was in Batman while with director Tim Burton nothing is boring or underdone. this completely OTT but very solid piece of movie making is grand sequel to Batman which should be seen while the best Batman is still Batman Forever this movie is still very, very entertaining.

Rated - 2 starsFar too many cliche's

A customer from London , 29/06/2006

I usually love Tim Burton's work, but not this time. the plot was too far fetched and so predictable. The acting too trite and even the camera work was less than inspiring. Too silly to be a decent film, give this one a miss.
