Rating of 4 stars out of 5 Radio Times

One of seemingly dozens of PoW dramas made in the mid-1950s, this is set in the infamous German fortress of the title. The story about the daring escapes undertaken by Allied prisoners has little time for the psychology of imprisonment, but the action is still well played — tense at times, music-hall jolly at others. John Mills plays Pat Reid, on whose first-hand account the film is based, and Eric Portman, Ian Carmichael, Lionel Jeffries and Bryan Forbes are the other inmates of heroic hue.

Probably the most convincing of the British accounts of POW life, with a careful balance of tragedy and comedy against a background of humdrum, boring daily existence. A TV series followed in 1972.

Rated - 5 starsThe ultimate P.O.W. Film

All of the 'Bad boys' of the Allied forces are sent to a remote, inhospitable and almost escape proof Castle - Colditz.

Instead of buckling down to the German army these prisoners go to extra ordinary lengths to escape from their nightmare.

Think Sunday afternoon BBC2. Entertaining feature that washes over you. Has a slightly 'stereotypical' WW2 POW camp film feel to it. Good watch, but not challenging!
