Brief synopsis of Swept Away

British director Guy Ritchie (LOCK, STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS, SNATCH) here remakes the controversial 1975 Italian film SWEPT AWAY... BY AN UNUSUAL DESTINY IN THE BLUE SEA OF AUGUST as a vehicle for his pop icon spouse, Madonna. The rich and spoiled Amber Leighton (Madonna) spends the bulk of her husband's Mediterranean yacht voyage drinking, being bored, and insulting the crew. The class tables turn when she winds up lost at sea and eventually swept onto a deserted island with the same sailor she's been extra rude to all through the voyage. Giuseppe (Adriano Giannini, son of Giancarlo, who played the same role in the original) seizes the chance to dominate his former employer, and dictate the terms of their survival and inevitable torrid island passion. The political ranting and darker sexual elements of the 1975 version are toned down this time out, but potential viewers should note there's still some un-PC slapping and a near-rape. The exquisite scenery is a plus, as is Madonna's look in the film: Deeply tan, with chiseled, muscular arms and sexy facial wrinkles, she emerges a ravishing, buff, bronze goddess. Her fans will hopefully be awed by this incarnation of their favorite, chameleon-like diva.

Halliwell's Film Guide

A vapid remake of an Italian movie on a subject that was first, and rather better, done by J. M. Barrie in The Admirable Crichton. There's no wit or humour to be found in this treatment, just a great deal of posturing.

Entertainment Weekly

"...A guilty pleasure of soft-core kitsch, and Madonna and Giannini achieve a lively S&M chemistry..."

Variety

"...Madonna looks good here....[Giannini] proves likable and wildly photogenic..."

Rated - 3 starsBetter than expected film

Due to the massive drumming the film got when originally released, mainly due to Madonna's below-par performance (which is somewhat deserved), I was expecting a complete turkey here. However I was suprisingly impressed by the movie, which is a tale of money and love and is beatifully shot and directed. It is a shame that it is let down by the less than great acting abilitites of Mrs Ritchie. Worth a watch and 3 out of 5.

This film is basically about a stuck up rich woman (played by Maddonna) and how she changes as they story advances. I found that the storyline was very dry and slow and you often felt like turning the movie off. This was one of the worst movies i have seen in a few years and i wish i hadn't rented it. Wouldn't recommend it.

Rated - 3 starsShe can't act, but she looks great!

It maybe advisable to watch this film with the sound off. The part of the world this film was shot in is beautiful and Madonna has to be one of the most photogenic people on the planet. However, the films story and Madonna’s acting doesn’t match the visual elements.

Rated - 4 starsSurprisingly good performance by Madonna

Lets face it- she will never get an oscar. But this in this remake directed by the husband Guy Ritchie, Madonna shows warmth and emotion. Beautifully filmed nature scenes get a big plus and the cinematography by Alex Barber gets 10/10. Lovely performance of 'Come on a My House' by Madonna.

Rated - 2 starsBeautiful beach, shame about the film

I think my main problem with the film was that it tried to be too many things.

In parts it was Jacques Tati style commedy; or debonair 60's sauve, style series and then tragic love story.

And honestly the ball-crunching, Material Girl Madonna wants us to believe she is makes a convincing a sex-slave kitten creature to a sailor once stranded on a desert island after 5 minutes?

The setting however is lovely and entirely convincing. Filmed on the Sardinian east coast, were I went on holiday this year and it is just as lovely as it looks on film.

A film perhaps best kept for die hard Madonna fans.

I rented this cause I thought 'It can't be that bad surely!' How wrong was I??!! It's worse than I could've imagined! I rented Gigli under the same premise but Gigli is Oscar material compared to this.

The storyline is a sweet, although unoriginal idea, but the awful script, (the acting not helping) really makes the film an absolute shocker. Madge really should stick to music and musicals, ('D*** Tracy' and 'Evita' she rocks in!) Guy Ritchie will wisely avoid non gangster/comedy films ('Snatch' surely is one of the best films like ever!)

Anyway, they say seeing is believing, well you'd better believe it, for once the critics were spot on.

(Oh yeah, the only reason I gave it a '1' rather than '0' was the couple of top songs on the soundtrack.)
