Brief synopsis of Man And Boy

In this made for TV adaptation of Tony Parsons' best-selling novel, Ioan Gruffud plays high-flying executive Harry Silver who has to learn the hard way what fatherhood is all about. When the unsettled Harry has a one-night stand with a colleague, his wife leaves him to care for their five year-old son on his own. After a bad start, he ropes in help from his parents and an American waitress and soon they are discovering how strong the father-son bond can be.

Rating of 2 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Comedian Bill Cosby launched his big-screen career as star and executive producer of this mild, old-fashioned western drama about blacks out west after the Civil War. Cosby is good as the homesteader who takes his young son in pursuit of a stolen horse, but director EW Swackhamer lets too many actors chew the scenery and stages some unconvincing shoot-outs. Yaphet Kotto plays a powerful bully, Douglas Turner Ward is a cantankerous outlaw, while Leif Erickson has the only substantial white role as a lawman.

Wasn't sure what too expect from this - took a little while to get into, but well worth it.

Gentle humour, great acting and a pretty good ending to boot:-)

Well worth renting

This film was dreadful, so slow and bitty! I can't see what is so brilliant about this. I only give it the two stars because it gives a moving portrayal of a marriage that breaks down. But it is so unrealistic.

For example the little boy falls into an empty swimming pool from a great height and smashes his head open; his father picks him up and jogs the kid (with his head dangling) to the hospital. Wouldn't this would cause a brain haemorrhage? Well not here, the kid is absolutely fine.

Having read the book by Tony Parsons, I was very disappointed by this film. The acting was barely watchable. Best actor was the little boy.

Rated - 1 starsGreat Book - not so good film

Loved the book by Tony Parsons. This made for TV movie sticks as close to the book as you can get, but a budget production when you compare it to 'about a boy'.

None of the actors were inspiring - worth a watch but don't waste a Saturday night on it.

This is a terrible film with wet characters, who, quite frankly, you end up not caring about either way - except, perhaps, for the child - who is the only decent actor in the whole film.

The direction is sloppy, you're not quite sure where it's going and there is absolutely no chemistry between the guy and his wife or the waitress. The whole film just drags along and you can't wait until it finishes.

Whatever you do, don't see it!
