Brief synopsis of Patlabor 1 And 2

The 2-Disc set collects together both of Mamoru Oshii's Manga masterpieces.
MOBILE POLICE: In the world of PATLABOR, the city of Future Tokyo is threatened by crimes perpetrated by criminal elements in control of Labors, all-purpose humanoid machines built to perform physical work. The new Special Vehicles-Section 2 unit of the Tokyo Police finds itself facing terrorists without the aid of their newly-modified Labors and a mysterious suicide triggers a chain of events that lead to ferocious battle.
THE MOVIE: Based on characters created by Masumi Yuuki, this sci-fi police drama is set three years after MOBILE POLICE and finds the advanced robots who patrol the city are being infected by a virus causing them to go berserk and the destruction of a United Nations team has spread panic onto the streets of Tokyo.

Averagely put together, stock-in-trade 'giant robots on the loose' anime effort. The English language dub is laughable and the Japanese 2.0 track is full of Japanese fellas roaring and growling out risble dialogue through faces so contorted by dated hand drawn 'Japanimation', (read huge eyes and even bigger mouths as often as they can be squeezed on screen) it made me cringe. Lasted the whole film only via judicious use of the scene select button on my remote. Next!!!

Rated - 3 starsNot the usual

anime/manga action and violence.

Very good story line, plot driven and well made.

Having watched a lot of these types of films I was pleasantly surprised. It is set just 50 years on from the 2nd World War and was not filled with unexplained and incomprehensible themes.

It is very 'wordy' but well worth a look.

I you liked Ghost in the Shell here's a preview of what they made before it. The atmosphere is similar so you shouldn't be disappointed.

Rated - 5 starsPatlabor 2 shines

Patlabor 1:

Beautifully animated, with a complex detective story. Oshii has an excellent ability to skillfully incorporate unusual 'camera' angles, and this greatly affects the atmosphere. There is little political or philosophical component to this film, unlike many of Oshii's other outtings (including the sequel), but it is a highly enjoyable watch - with good characters, and a fantastic 'cheesy' 1980s Japanese soudtrack.

Patlabor 2:

This film bears all the marks of a fully mature Oshii film. It is imeasureably superior to its predecessor in all respects. A haunting score underpins a highly sophisticated political commentary very relevant to the contemporary world, with stunning imagery.
