Brief synopsis of 8 Mile

Controversial rapper Eminem (real name Marshall Mathers) makes his big screen debut with 8 MILE, a bracing drama directed by the increasingly audacious Curtis Hanson. Set in 1995 in the bleak, urban battle zone of Detroit, the film follows the struggles of a young man desperate to make a better life for himself. Jimmy Smith, Jr., better known as Rabbit, is destined for a life of squalor. Living in a cramped trailer with his deadbeat mom (Kim Basinger), Rabbit works in a factory to make ends meet. His only outlet is hip-hop. Possessing a talent for freestyle rapping, Rabbit still hasn't managed to unleash his true potential. But his best friend Future (Mekhi Phifer) is determined to make that happen. Future forces Rabbit to enter a freestyle battle that he blew the week before, giving him another chance at redemption. Hanson's stellar portrait of lower-class urban disillusionment, shot with uncompromisingly gritty realism by Rodrigo Prieto, proves that the issue is no longer about race, it's about money. Eminem delivers a bold performance as a troubled youngster trying to find his place in a harsh, cruel world.

Rating of 4 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Director Curtis Hanson puts a new spin on the familiar “triumph against the odds” genre with this slick showcase for the talents of superstar rapper Eminem. The story follows aspiring rap artist “Rabbit” (Eminem), who hopes to escape his bleak life in Detroit's 8 Mile district — the dividing line between the city's white suburbs and the predominantly black inner city. But, after losing his job and his (pregnant) girlfriend, he's forced to work in a soul-destroying factory and to live with his alcoholic mother (Kim Basinger) and her lover. The star's notorious misogyny and homophobia are understandably softened here — though audience credibility may be stretched by a scene in which he chides his friends for taunting a gay colleague. While it doesn't break any new ground, Hanson's film is a compellingly gritty account of growing up in poverty on Detroit's streets. But the real revelation here is Eminem, who delivers an irresistibly likeable and honest performance, albeit pretty much as himself.

Successful attempt to make a rapper into a movie star with a gritty, semi-autobiographical drama; in the process, though, Eminem has been tamed.

A massive disappointment. The cliched showbiz hopeful plot is more Showgirls than The Jazz Singer. Eminem has little chance to show any acting range as he is only asked to show mannerisms ranging from gormless to stupid looking. The wit he shows in his videos is noticeably absent. He is a rare talent in a world of slick but dull Justin Timberlake-alikes and deserves another chance on the big screen. 8 Mile fails to go the distance.

Rated - 3 starsU wanna Battle?

Gonzo Soul from The Thoroughfare, Woodbridge , 10/05/2004

As a avid hip hop fan I thought this was a very interesting film. Eminem is a very competant screen presence especially the parts where its just him and his youngest sister.

My main problem is the politics of this film. Right wing groups in America picked up on that Rabbit succeeds against the aversity of reverse racism and bad mothering. This had made Eminem a bit of an unlikely Right wing icon.. crazy!!!

But the battles in this film are very exciting and great to watch, especially the explosive finale. The very best battles are the bonus ones on the DVD, where Eminem battles real contenders selected from the best of the club scenes. This is a great piece of hip hop and worth checkin for that alone.

Peace. Gonz

OK, so forget all you think you know about the chain-saw-weilding-trailor-trash phenomenon that is Eminem. The question is, can he act? Thankfully, yes he can, with a cracking supporting cast of dodgey mates, foxy girlfriend, scary gangs and even scarier alcoholic mother. Basinger makes the most of a great part as the boozy mom and the firey denoument certainly enables you to appreciate some of what rap is about. The soundtrack adds menace to an already menacing film - well worth a watch.

Rated - 4 starsIN THE END IT'S EMINEN CHARMIN

A customer from Rosslare , 07/11/2003

It's the rap stars undoubted talent and enormous charm which carries this slick and well sung rap to it's filmic sucess and does more for popular culture on the big screen than many other too big for their britches outings. No doubt Eminen has talent, and now clearly as an actor, but it is his readniess to expose threads of his own life story and commit to Curtis Hanson's dirty gritty vision that is his divided Detroit, that lets us in and in deep to a desperate no hope world that grew rap. Yea it's rough, tough, bloody, and dark, but it also has a movie heart and it's that balance that means entertaining too. Anyone who doesn't get rap should get 8Mile and I gurantee you will.
