Brief synopsis of Godzilla

Nuclear testing once again awakens a green behemoth. However, this large iguana-like creature seems to be unrelated to its Japanese counterpart. The lizard proceeds to demolish large portions of New York as the US military attempts to destroy it. Matthew Broderick and Jean Reno star.

Rating of 2 stars out of 5 Radio Times

In this dreary American overhaul from Independence Day director Roland Emmerich, Japan's favourite giant lizard crawls out of radioactive waters in the South Pacific and heads for New York. Resembling an over-produced version of The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, Emmerich's blockbuster behemoth replaces man-in-suit special effects with dodgy computer digitals and sub-Jurassic Park thrills. What it doesn't replicate is the endearing charm the celebrated fire-breather had when he stomped through cardboard skyscrapers. The old Toho Studios' fantasy adventures may have lower budgets, but even the cheapest shows more imagination and flair than this dismal monster mishmash.

Rated - 5 starsGreat film

From the director of Independence Day, there are some similarities in this film.

There is the new threat to the earth that is very hard to defeat, the slightly meek and loveable main character coupled with the more aggressive and funny other main character, with the government doing one thing while a small group of others take care of another, when put together the mission succeeds.

You will notice these similarities while watching this, however it's still a great movie. The graphics are very good and it's very entertaining. The movie makes you like both the main characters and Godzilla, and somehow makes you want both to win. It's almost like they're on the same team.

This is a great movie, and I think its well worth a rent. It would be particularly good as a family type movie as the violence isn't very gory and I don't think it contains any swear words.

I recommend this film. Enjoy!

Rated - 3 starsMonster movie or Godzilla movie?

A customer from Birmingham, UK , 11/12/2004

If you can forget that the title is 'Godzilla' then this is an above average creature feature that is entertaining for a couple of hours. If you are a Godzilla fan this movie will irritate you, as the star is an overgrown iguana that runs in fright from the military, rather than the nuclear monster from Japan who is prepared to slog it out with the army and trash cities in the process.

Rated - 3 starsMediocre

I didn't have high hopes for this film and I was proved right. This film is an all round mediocre affair, some previous year's summer blockbuster. It has none of the original film in it, of what it symbolized and meant for that era and audience, though I'm sure that wasn't this filmmaker?s intention anyway.

I only got this film out because it has two of my favourite actors in it, but what the wonderful Hank Azaria and genesis Jean Reno are doing here I really don't know, what were they thinking?!

The CGI Godzilla is impressive in size and design. But I'm afraid there isn't a lot else to recommend this film to you. The plot is completely predictable, and they seem to want to squeeze the thing out as much as they can, so that it really does get ridiculous and very boring.

The only other good thing about it is of course the Jamiroquai song and I think the video is one of the extra features on this DVD.

Still I give it 3 stars, as there are worse things out there, this film isn't offensive in anyway at all and will provide you with a distraction on a bored evening when there is nothing better on offer.

Much underrated film with fine performances from Jean Reno and Mathew Broderick. If you like science fiction then this is watchable otherwise it is best avoided.
