Brief synopsis of The Avengers

In the AVENGERS feature film, the characters of the cult 1960s television show are back at it again. The suave John Steed (Ralph Fiennes) and the sultry Emma Peel (Uma Thurman) team up to thwart the nefarious plans of Sir August de Wynter (Sean Connery), who is out to control the world's weather. Watch for Patrick Macnee, who played the original Steed in the TV series, as Invisible Jones.

Rating of 1 stars out of 5 Radio Times

The cult 1960s TV series gets royally shafted by Hollywood in this stunningly designed blockbuster that's stunningly awful in every other department. Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman couldn't be more miscast as John Steed and Emma Peel, here trying to stop villainous Sir August De Wynter (Sean Connery playing himself again) holding the world's weather to ransom and freezing London to an arctic standstill. Ruthlessly edited before release and packed with arch one-liners, bad puns and vulgar double entendres, this is misguided and misbegotten to a simply staggering degree, while Jeremiah Chechik's mannered direction screeches the action to an unexciting halt at every flat turn. Terrible special effects and zero chemistry between Fiennes and Thurman make this notorious disaster a total waste of everyone's time and energy.

Time Out

Lousy as it is, Warner Bros' big budget version of the cult '60s TV series isn't any worse than, say, the last two... Read more on www.timeout.com

Rated - 2 starsI was pleasantly surprised!

To be honest, I rented this film more out of curiosity to see how bad this version was going to be in comparison to the original TV series and not expecting very much. Admittedly the storyline is cringe-worthy with a capital ‘C’ (Sean Connery tries to take over the world by manipulating the weather!), however I really don’t think this is what the film is about, so if you can’t get over the ‘lack of decent storyline’ or hoping that this is going to be like the TV series - then don’t watch it! Instead, sit down with a huge slice of cake – and view this more from the ‘Americans poking gentle fun out of British eccentricities’ angle (e.g. lots of ‘tea-drinking’ gags, projecting the stiff upper lip throughout ridiculous situations, repressed sexual desires expressed through some hilarious innuendos between Steed and Mrs Peel, etc.). Ralph Fiennes doesn’t do a bad job, but Uma Thurman is very good (very convincing British accent too and some wonderful outfits girls), though not nearly as dominatrix-like as the wonderful Diana Rigg! Three words to some this film up; quirky, eccentric and doesn’t take itself too seriously. Worth renting.

Rated - 1 starsDreadful!

I'm a big fan of The Avengers so I was really delighted to see that they were making an up to date film version.

This has to be the worst film I have ever seen, the actors are wooden, there is a lack of chemistry between Uma Thurman and Ralph Fiennes which is important for the film to work and the storyline is a farce..

All in all it's a terrible recreation of an amazing series, if you want to see it hire the original series.

Very weak and not a patch on the original, its a good job the original cast are still alive or they would be turning in their graves this re-make is so bad.

The Worst Movie ever made. Fact.

Watching Sean Connery in this movie is so utterly painful. It is as embarrassing as having to watch your Alzheimers addled Uncle dancing a waltz to the Las Ketchup song at a family BBQ, wearing only his vest and slippers.

A serious version of Austin Powers..

Seems perculiar with Sean Connery as a Baddy and a youngetser as steed, but it works well.
