Brief synopsis of Mafia!

The director of Airplane and Hot Shots brings us this spoof of the "organized crime family" film.

Jim Abrahams's Mafia spoof is in the same vein as his earlier hits Airplane! and The Naked Gun, with sadly similar jokes. That it works at all is only due to convincing performances from Olympia Dukakis, Jay Mohr, Christina Applegate and the sorely missed Lloyd Bridges, who plays a Don Corleone figure training his son (Mohr) to take over the family business. However, there comes a time when he's disposable, so fellow hoods send a temptress to woo Mohr away from his family and girlfriend (Applegate). You might say it's time someone sent up The Godfather; you won't after seeing this.

Halliwell's Film Guide

A tired send-up of The Godfather trilogy and similar gangster movies; a few jokes might have helped.

Loved this film! Really funny, all the way through. The whole family were chuckling away, but the tears were running down my face.

The sort of film we will want to rent again!

Bit slapstick, some good bits ,juvenile airplane type humour.

Starts off well but seems to tire half way through.

OK for light hearted viewing, not bad not outstanding.Do not need to see again.

Rated - 2 starsTired spoof

Having mocked 'Top Gun' with 'Hot Shots!', it's now the turn of gangster movies to get the Jim Abrahams gag-a-minute treatment. So out come all the expected jokes directed at The Godfather, GoodFellas, Casino, etc. Some of it is amusing, but not nearly enough, suggesting that this particular well might have run dry.
