The problem with Jean-Claude Van Damme is that he seems intent on broadening his acting range: give him a simple plot, cartoonish characters and a legion of bad guys to duff up, and he's fine. However, the “Muscles from Brussels” comes unstuck when he attempts to show his more sensitive side, as in this soft-centred action thriller. Van Damme plays a convict on the run who holes up with a pretty young widow (Rosanna Arquette) and her children (who include one of the Culkin clan, Kieran). Bad guy Joss Ackland is trying to evict Arquette from her land, but Van Damme comes to her rescue. Director Robert Harmon seems to have been aiming for some sort of modern-day Shane, but Van Damme is no Alan Ladd and, to make matters worse, the fighting sequences are a let-down. Joe Eszterhas (Showgirls, Basic Instinct) had a hand in the script.

Halliwell's Film Guide

Tedious action movie with a little added sentimentality, intended, but failing, to give its star a wider appeal.

Damn she's a got a fine body and looks good naked. That's all I really remember about this film. Really nice jugs.

Aside from that it's a bit poo.
