Brief synopsis of Excel Saga - Vol. 1 - Episodes 1-5

Billed as "the ultimate parody of anime," EXCEL SAGA certainly goes out of its way to parody every convention of the genre it can. From the cloying J-pop opening, it's clear that this series' sole aim is to be a good-natured farce, one that revolves around a main character who, on the surface is not much different from any other anime heroine. However, the key difference between Excel and all those who preceded her is that Excel is completely and utterly insane and considers it her goal to conquer the city of F. This gives the series a clear and ingenious jumping off point as it encounters Martian princesses, afro-wearing action heroes, mysterious governmental agencies, space butlers, deranged comic book authors, annoying roommates, and removable moustaches, among other things.

What a trip! A fun ride through the brilliant minds of Japanese cartoon makers. If the West made cartoons as good as this I would still come home for 3.30. One episode of this series has a more laughs than an entire series of the likes of Spongebob Squarepants.

The cartoon is quite adult in nature and not suitable for younger viewers but older children would like it. However, I for one feel that the people who would get the most out of this rental is fans of Anima as there are many in jokes and elements to laugh at.

Definitely worth picking up if you get the chance.

If this carries on in the same vein it will become one of my favourite anime of all time - it's just totally crazy - loads of fun, laughs and surreal goings on. This must have been created by a twisted genius - nothing I have seen before in the anime world is anything like it. Superb!

It's all been said already, I think. Totally bonkers, almost impossible to sum up, and very funny with it. My only criticism - and it's not really a criticism - is that there's so much packed into a single episode, including Excel jabbering at 3 million miles per hour, that it's difficult to watch more than 2 episodes at once without feeling as though your brain's been mugged. I watched the Japanese language version and even as a seasoned subtitle reader I occasionally had difficulty keeping up (sub-phobics needn't worry, there's English audio too). I loved it though, and will definitely be checking out the rest of the series.

Rated - 5 starsIncredibly Entertaining

With a theme tune that you just want to hear over and over again, Excel Saga is a Japanese Anime above all others. I frequently found myself chuckling to the rather slapstic humour of which is done in perfect good taste. A perfect Anime for any Japanimation fan to watch.
