Rating of 3 stars out of 5 Radio Times

Ever since his masterpiece 12 Angry Men, director Sidney Lumet has had a taste for legal thrillers. And this — before it topples from high mystery to low melodrama — cops a plea for craftsmanship, at least. Rebecca De Mornay stars as the slick lawyer defending wife-killer Don Johnson, whose lethal duplicity is not just concerned with the death of one woman. Larry Cohen's script is far more serrated than the Jagged Edge it resembles, and so too is Lumet's handling of some of the suspenseful legal scenes, before he succumbs to victim-in-peril clichés.

Time Out

Though the title suggests a Jagged Edge-style thriller, Lumet has a taste for weightier courtroom dramas. Audiences... Read more on www.timeout.com

Halliwell's Film Guide

Elegant but empty thriller, taken at too easy a tempo to create any suspense or tension.

This is an excellent film, if courthouse dramas are your thing, Rebecca DeMornay proves again she is very underated, and Johnson is remarkabely good , he doesnt so much walk onto screen as 'ooze' . It gets over the initial made for TV feel at the beginning and is definately one to relax with on a Friday night! Bravo!

Rated - 2 starsA good performance by Don Johnson

LondonMatt from London [Highly rated reviewer] , 02/02/2005

The setup is very similiar to Jagged Edge and despite being a more recent film, it has a very eighties feel to it. Don Johnson, at his oily best, is a playboy whose wife has died. He's accused of her murder so he hires a top lawyer (Rebecca DeMornay) to defend him. She takes the case because she wants to see if she can handle such a manipulative client who freely admits he seduces women for a living. Whereas Jagged Edge was all about whether the defendant was guilty, this film is more about the character of the playboy and how he gets under the lawyer's skin. Don Johnson gives a very good performance. Rebecca DeMornay is less good; she's convincing when playing the high-powered lawyer, but when she's called on to do vulnerability, it just doesn't work.

This film is passable, but there are better courtroom dramas out there.

The best thing about this film is the title. The acting is poor and the plot is predictable. You know right from the start what the outcome will be.
